Wow! It’s been almost a month since our last posting. The park really fills fast after Christmas, and that means more people = more parties / happy hours / potluck dinners. It is truly amazing how busy we stay, and we comment often that this retirement lifestyle is a full time job.

We started the year with OSU vs Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl. CC went “all in” as we prepared appetizers and cold adult beverages for what was anticipated to be a good game. It was, as OSU was victorious 41 - 38 . When OSU scored the winning touchdown, CC screamed so loud, it caused one of our neighbors to come knock on the door and check on us. He thought I was "doing something" to her???(As usual, click on any image to enlarge.)

Our friends from Englewood Beach, FL, Kathi and Obie, came for a week to visit our winter home here in the RGV. The week they were here was a little cooler than normal, but we did our best to cram two weeks of activities into one; two trips to Nuevo Progreso for $2 margs, shopping and lonches, 2 potluck dinners (one smoked ribs and the other a fish fry), daily happy hours, shopping , sightseeing and pool time as weather permitted. We had a wonderful visit, and, as usual, the time went by too fast; probably because we didn’t have any fun at all. NOT.

One afternoon, after pool time, and before happy hour, Kathi was shocked as she started screaming, “CC, there is an officer at the front door”. I thought, “What the hell is going on”, as I laid eyes on the "officer”.

One look was all I needed; it was just Kenny, another of the Winter Texans here at the park. He has a propensity for dressing up in a variety of costumes. You just never know when, where, or what he will show up as. We all had a good laugh, even Kenny, as he was pleased with his “act” and the fact he scared the beejees out of Kathi. But today was a first. We were to witness only his first appearance, and little did we know that he also had plans for Obie after dinner that same evening. We were all laughing so hard, someone actually tinkled in their shorts. After “Lena” left, we all decided we would take up a collection to get her some new shoes for her outfit, but finding a women’s 12EEE with a 5” spike heel may prove a difficult task to complete. Are we having fun yet?

Since it’s been a few days, a visit to Nuevo Progreso was on the agenda for manicures and pedicures at Bianca’s. On this trip, Hugh and Jane decided to tag along and indulge as well. Hugh is a little on the tight side, but $9 for a pedicure is just too good a deal to pass up.

The NPBR (National Professional Bull Riders) held a world championship event in nearby Mercedes, about 5 miles from our park, so we decided to attend. CC and I drove to McAllen one morning to purchase 8 tickets that would permit us to enter the event without standing in the long lines formed by those purchasing their tickets at the gate. We got right in, had excellent seats, and thoroughly enjoyed the 3 hour show. Nothing but bull riding; it just doesn’t get any better than this. (The burning 8 in the picture stands for the 8 seconds a rider must stay on the bull for a qualified ride.)

CC and I like to explore the RGV, so we decided Arroyo City was as good a day trip as any. Arroyo City, also known as Arroyo, is located on Farm Road 2925 a mile east of Farm Road 1847 and ten miles northeast of Rio Hondo in northeastern Cameron County. The area was settled by Mexican herders in the early 1860s and named for its location on the Arroyo Colorado. In 1904 the community had a school with one teacher and twenty-four students. A post office operated in Arroyo City from 1887 to 1907. In 1910 the settlement had two stores and a population estimated at ten. During the 1930s a few scattered houses remained in the area. In 1970 the community had various dwellings and businesses, and in 1990 Arroyo City was still marked on state highway maps.

The arroyo (a steep-sided gully cut by running water in an arid or semiarid region) still operates today as a shipping channel, running from the Gulf of Mexico to Harlingen, TX, and is 250-350 feet wide the entire length. The Army Corp of Engineers maintains it by dredging, to allow large cargo ships adequate depth for passage. Five miles inland lies Arroyo City Park, complete with 2 fishing piers, boat launch, and RV park. This is a remote area, roughly 15 miles to the nearest store of any kind in Rio Hondo. For those looking for some prime fishing, and/or “getting away from civilization”, this is the place. We haven’t yet decided on if we will drive the RV one hour west to spend a week, possibly in March.

Well, that is just a snapshot of our month here in Weslaco, TX. If we can slow down a little from our hectic social calendar, future postings will resume to at least once a week. There are just so many hours in the day, and the main reason we chose this lifestyle was to live every minute, and unfortunately living takes priority over blogging. January 4, 2012 "2011 Budget"

First, we would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. 2012 will be a pivotal year for our country, and we hope you will utilize sound judgement in restoring our great nation to that which our Founding Fathers envisioned. Together, we can make a difference.

Well, the final numbers for 2011 are in, and they're not too bad considering the year we've experienced, with all the travel and lifestyle upgrades we've made. I've had some comments / questions regarding how we manage to adhere to our budget. The truth is we have been on a budget for over 30 years, so it is no problem. The biggest challenge is distinguishing needs from wants, within the budget, and I'll give credit where credit is due; CC has improved dramatically in this area. That virtually eliminates the need for me to say "No", which I have a hard time doing anyway. (I'm a pushover, what else can I say?) Could we live this lifestyle on less? Absolutely. And there may come a time when we need to tighten the belt a little, but for now, we're living our dream, and enjoying every minute. (As usual, click on the image to enlarge.)

How long does it take to get a Dometic refrigerator repaired? I ordered the part on October 10, and the repair was done by Camping World in Mission, TX on December 1. I could have replaced the part myself, but Dometic told me that if it was not installed by an “authorized” service center, it would void the warranty. Oh well, at least it didn’t cost me anything, other than the frustration, time and the diesel for the 44 mile roundtrip, AND more importantly, CC is happy the auto defrost feature on the freezer is once again working properly.

We are transitioning into a more sedentary lifestyle for the winter at Country Sunshine, at least in the sense that we are not moving the rig every week or so. There are so many activities available here, one could stay completely immersed in them from sun up to well beyond sun down, IF one so desired. We pick and choose ours, and if something else more entertaining arises, we just go with the flow. Most days begin with a light breakfast and 8 am exercise class, followed by showers. (Yes, we actually do take them, ESPECIALLY on Saturday. LOL) By 10, it’s computer time to catch up on e-mails, Facebook, etc., followed by the daily dilemma of where to dine for lunch. 2 pm is pool time followed by 4 pm Happy Hour (most days), and dinner at 6. Hot tub time is 7 pm, and then it’s back to the rig for some much needed R&R. We have been here a month, and it seems like only a week. Time does fly when you’re having fun.

No week here would be complete without at least on trip SOTB to Nuevo Progreso. On Friday, December 2, the town held a “Welcome Back Winter Texans” celebration. They blocked off the main street, and set up a stage where numerous musical groups performed really, REALLY, loud music. (As is their culture.)

Some of the merchants were giving away free food and drinks, while others provided Mexican trinkets as thank you gifts. Street performers, dressed in an array of costumes, dazzled Winter Texans with their antics. (As usual, click on any image to enlarge)

As we were making our way down to Pancho’s for our customary “Best Margarita in Nuevo Progreso”, fighting the crowded sidewalks, made even more crowded by “Winter Texan Day”, Miss Tamaulipas 2011 Karen Alejandra Lizcano Flores appeared, (Tamaulipas is the Mexican state in which Nuevo Progreso is located) surrounded by two body guards. By the time I could get my camera out, the crowd had pushed me down the sidewalk, and that Kodak Moment had forever lapsed. I did manage to capture this picture of her on the internet. As you can see, she is a very pretty senorita.

The weather has turned cooler, actually cold for the RGV. Lows this week in the low 40’s with highs in the 60-75 degree range; sweatshirt and jacket weather for sure. CC reminds me what it’s like back in Colorado right now, and that definitely puts things in perspective. So, all in all, it’s very “seasonal” here, and we’re lovin’ every minute.

November 12 - 20, 2011 "Customs and Border Patrol & Día de la Revolución"

Current weather here at 7 am is 77 degrees and 77% humidity. Weather in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is normally breezy; some days winds of 20 - 35 mph, and some days only 5 - 10 mph when a cold front is approaching. So far in the 2 weeks we’ve been here, there has only been one day too cool to make use of the heated swimming pool and hot tub. It’s currently 23 degrees in Denver, CO, so I shouldn’t complain, right? (As usual, click on any image to enlarge.)

This year our spot at Country Sunshine faces southwest, so the predominantly southern winds are, for the most part, blocked by the rig, when we sit on the patio. We also have shade most of the day, until around 4 pm. Most days are too windy to use the propane grill, and I’ve been tempted to get a charcoal grill, which would work well, but need to once again de-clutter the basement to make room for it. That task is on my “to do” list this week, as we both miss not being able to grill / BBQ.

Last week, we had the opportunity to tour the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Station here in Weslaco. They started with a brief introduction followed by two short films outlining the responsibilities of CBP, which are also available online at their website. We were then given the nickel tour of non-sensitive areas including their vehicle lot and booking/detention area. While we were there, they were processing 4 individuals; 3 Mexican males, and a 16 year old male from Honduras. The kid looked extremely clean for traveling so far, but was visibly perplexed regarding his impending future in the US. We were told he had contacted a cousin here, and if that person came forward and could prove they had the ways and means to accommodate him, he would be allowed to go with them by way of a temporary visa.

One of the CBP officers told us they process about 1,000 illegals per month in the Weslaco sector alone. There are 5 sectors in the RGV, which translates to 60,000 illegals per year that get apprehended. The first 2 times each one is apprehended they are sent back to Mexico. For the US to legally arrest/convict/imprison them, CBP must catch them illegally entering the US 3 times. The vehicles used in these apprehensions are subjected to the elements common to this area; sand, water and mud, as most of the intruders simply swim across the Rio Grande River.

Of course, no week would be complete without at least one trip across the border to Nuevo Progreso. As we have become creatures of habit, first stop is Pancho’s Pharmacy to see Tony, who IMHO, makes the best $2 margarita in town. (Do we look like we’re having fun?) Last year, CC conditioned herself to the point of consuming 2 and still being able to walk across the bridge. This trip, however, she stopped at one. It takes awhile to build up your stamina to take on two, but if anyone is capable, CC is, without a doubt, hands down, up for the challenge. Next week her “goal” is 1 ½ . After margaritas, the group went to Angel’s for lunch, and I must say, eating here last year was much better. Will we return???

What a surprise it was that we just happened to be in Nuevo Progreso (NP) on November 20, 2011, Mexico celebrated the Centennial Anniversary of its Revolution, Día de la Revolución. On this date, in the year 1910 the revolutionary war to overthrow the dictator Porfirio Díaz, began. Parades and fiestas are part of the celebration. NP is a town of 9,000 and it seemed as there were an abundance of children of all ages participating in the parade. In the picture below, note the mustaches on the young boys.

There were numerous “floats”(?), some simply decorated trailers, while others decorated pickup trucks. The one thing they all had in common; all had their own PA system with blaringly LOUD music playing. For those of you unfamiliar with Mexico and planning to visit, be prepared for loud music all hours of the day and night; it is their national right and part of their culture.

This group of young girls, dressed in period costumes, complete with rifles to ward off the evil enemy. Some of the rifles were made from painted cardboard or thin plywood, while others carried their brother’s toy gun.

And of course, no parade would be complete without the equestrians; complete with donkey, the official horse of Mexico.

We are once again having a great time at our winter home in Weslaco. New people are arriving everyday as they flee the colder climates to the north. This Thursday we will have the potluck Thanksgiving Dinner at the Clubhouse around noon, and back again at 5 pm for leftovers, for anyone that didn’t get enough to eat at dinner. We will NOT be in attendance for leftovers.

We want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, and hope you acknowledge the holiday as it was meant to be celebrated. CC and I are truly thankful for all we have and feel truly blessed everyday to be living this enlightening, enlivening lifestyle.

November 1 - 12, 2011 "San Antonio RV"

In my previous posting I was so impressed with San Antonio RV; not so much now. Originally on October 25, when I called Allen telling him we were in route to San Antonio, and would be arriving on Wednesday the 26, he scheduled to replace the part on our refrigerator on Thursday or Friday, October 27 – 28, but that didn’t happen. I spoke to him on Friday afternoon, October 28, and he claimed he had been extremely busy, and it was too late in the day (3:30 pm) to make it happen, but he would be at our rig “first thing Monday morning”. When I pressed him for a time, he responded with, “I’ll call you when I’m on my way”.

It is now 1:30 pm on Monday afternoon, October 31 and have not seen or heard from Allen, so I decided to call him, and the call went directly to voice mail. I left a message to please call me and let me know what to expect. No call back from Allen.

It is now 7 pm, and I call him once more, and the call goes to voice mail. I again leave him a message to call me, and to inform him we would be leaving the San Antonio area around noon on Tuesday, November 1; and further if he could possibly get the job done first thing Tuesday morning. No call back from Allen. Now we are really in a quandary; do we stay or do we go?

Tuesday morning I called Allen at 8 am, and guess what? Voice mail again. I left another message asking for him to return my call and let me know what to expect. We waited around until noon; check out time at Braunig Lake, and departed San Antonio without hearing from Allen.

We arrived at Camping World (CW) in Mission, TX a little after 4 pm, and proceeded to the service counter to check in for our appointment. I spoke with Eddie at CW and asked if we could just boondock for the night, instead of driving 20 miles to Weslaco and then returning in the morning. He said, “no problemo”.

Wednesday morning I asked Eddie at CW if he could fix our refrigerator. He took the necessary information and said he would call Dometic. A couple of days later on Friday, Eddie called and informed me Dometic would not ship an additional part, as one had already been shipped to Allen at San Antonio RV, and it was my responsibility to contact Allen and either get him to ship the part to me, or return it to Dometic. OK, another call to Allen yielded the same result; voicemail and he didn’t/hasn’t returned my call.

Now I’m really in a pickle. Could something awful have happened to Allen or his family, and that is the reason for not returning my calls? Or, is he not returning my calls for other reasons? Guess I’ll try AGAIN on Monday, November 7, to call Allen; maybe I’ll get lucky.

I’m going to think positive thoughts as I dial the number (210) 359-9660. Ring….ring….ring…Voice mail. So I leave yet another message for him to return my call or please ship the part to me or back to Dometic, and offered to pay him for his time to do so. End result, no call back from Allen.

OK, it is now Thursday, November 10, and decide to try again, but this time there is a new greeting on his voice mail, stating he will be out of the office from November 11, returning on Tuesday morning, November 15. So I know, at the very least, he is still alive.

I have also sent an e-mail to Dometic, outlining the chain of events and the outcome so far. I’m hoping to get this resolved, but right now, I don’t feel as confident as I did a month ago. Is this the norm for Customer Service in 2011?

October 23 - 31, 2011 "Childress, TX to San Antonio, TX"

We arrived in Childress, and got set up at the Best Western RV Park, which is only a few blocks from CC’s daughter’s house. But, come to think about it, EVERYTHING in Childress is only a few blocks from anywhere in town. CC and I prepared a dinner of penne pasta with sausage, crimini mushrooms, onion, and green peppers in a savory marinara sauce, and Letta and Billy arrived around 6 pm. We had a wonderful visit over dinner and shared a glass of wine.

On our last visit, we journeyed to Palo Duro Canyon Sate Park, so today we decided on the closer and lesser Caprock Canyons State Park, 100 miles southeast of Amarillo in Briscoe County, which opened in 1982. It consists of 15,313.6 acres (including the Trailway, a 64.25 mile Rail-to-Trail conversion, acquired by donation in 1992 from a Railroad entrepreneur). This acquisition added recreational adventure, stretching from the western terminus at South Plains up on top of the caprock escarpment to the eastern terminus of Estelline in the Red River Valley. This multi-use trail (hike, bike, and equestrian), opened in 1993, stretches the park through Floyd, Briscoe, and Hall counties crossing 46 bridges and running through Clarity tunnel, one of the last active railroad tunnels in Texas. The 64.25 miles of the Trailway are open to the public from Estelline to South Plains. (As usual, click on any image to enlarge.)

The escarpment's scenic canyons were home for Indians of several cultures, including the Folsom culture of more than 10,000 years ago. A decrease or disappearance of some species, from Folsom times to present, indicates a gradual drying and perhaps warming of the climate. Later paleolithic hunters, associated with the Plainview culture, also occupied the area from 8000-9,000 years ago. Only slight traces of these people have been found at Caprock Canyons. As the climate became increasingly drier, the period of hunting and gathering cultures began. Smaller animals, as well as plant materials, made up the diet of the people. The Archaic period lasted from 8,000 to 2,000 years ago. Artifacts from this period include boiling pebbles for heating food, grinding stones for processing seeds, oval knives, and corner-notched or indented dart points. The Neo-Indian state was characterized by the appearance of arrow points and pottery. During the latter part of this period, 800 years ago until the Spanish exploration, permanent settlements were established, and agriculture was being practiced to some extent. These people traded Alibates flint for pottery, turquoise, and obsidian from the Puebloan groups to the west.

The region's historic era began when Spanish explorer Coronado traveled across the plains in 1541. After Spanish colonies were established in New Mexico around 1600, two-way trade between Plains Indians and New Mexicans began and gradually increased. The Plains Apache, present when Coronado arrived, acquired horses and became proficient buffalo hunters. They were displaced by the Comanche, who arrived in the early 1700s and dominated northwestern Texas, until they were finally subdued in the 1870s. During the Comanche reign, trade prospered and New Mexican buffalo hunters, known as ciboleros, and traders, known as Comancheros, were frequent visitors to this area. Las Lenguas Creek, a few miles south of the park, was a major trade area, and a site excavated on Quitaque Creek has produced artifacts indicating that it may have been a cibolero camp.

After 1874, Anglo settlement began, counties were organized, and ranches were established. Famed cattleman Charles Goodnight moved cattle into Palo Duro Canyon in 1876. In 1882, he bought vast areas of land for John G. Adair, who became owner of the noted J. A. Ranch. The land on which the park is located was included in the purchase. A railroad was built into this area in 1887, and by 1890, the town of Quitaque, with a population of 30, was a regular stage stop. The use of suitable lands for farming increased as more settlers arrived in the early 1900s, but most of the broken country is still ranch land. After passing through the hands of several owners, most of the land that now lies within park boundaries was acquired in 1936 by Theo Geisler, who died on August 15, 1969. The state purchased the land in 1975, and the park's Lake Theo was named after Geisler.

Missing from the family photo is Hurley, which belonged to Lane, but now resides with Grandparents Billy Don and Letta Jo. (Bet THAT hasn't happened to anyone else. LOL) We speculate that he is part Boxer, part Pit Bull, and part Spook. When surprised, his bark and demeanor would indicate Pit Bull and/or Boxer, but most of the time he is just Hurley being Hurley. Such a sweet face!

After a wonderful visit in Childress, we departed via US-287S to US-281S, in route to Coffee Creek Campground in Santo, TX. The trip thankfully, was uneventful. We bucked a pretty stiff head wind, but arrived unscathed around 3 pm. This is a fairly new, very pleasant RV park, one of the nicest we have stayed in; paved roads, wide lots, extremely clean restrooms with spacious showers, and a great hot tub and pool. Who would have thunk it in Santo?

We made our way, continuing southward on US-281 to Elmendorf, TX, on the southeast side of San Antonio, to Braunig Lake RV Resort, where we will lay up a few days in order for Allen from San Antonio RV to repair our Dometic refrigerator. It has been giving us an error code “ER-13”, and that indicates that the heating element in the freezer defroster is not working properly. From here we will venture southward to Mission, TX, where we have an appointment to get the oil changed at Camping World, before we park for the winter. (Cummins STRONGLY recommends that the oil be changed before letting the engine sit for prolonged periods without running.) From Camping World, we will take 83W to Weslaco, where we will once again winter at Country Sunshine.

October 10 - 22, 2011 "Oklahoma City Area"

Two weeks in Oklahoma City went by sooo quickly. CC spent the majority of her days de-cluttering her mom’s house, making it easier for her (Jo) to navigate, while I managed to arrange for a new windshield and repair a few small items on the motorhome (MH).

Since CC and I partially grew up in the area, we still have many friends here, and trying to catch up with all of them is nearly impossible, but I did manage to have lunch with Sid before he bolted off to Perry for a wrestling coaches meeting. John and Vicki invited us for the OSU-Texas game, and we collectively prepared a lasagna dinner with two of their kids, Daniel and Danae, who were home from college on mid-tern break. Chuck and Kelly drove up from Norman for dinner at Rococos, where we met Bobby, the Oklahoma equivalent to Ted Nugent. Before Rick headed to Key West for his daughter’s wedding, we squeezed in a dinner at Trapper’s. We took Jo on the 45 minute drive to Okarche, and dined at Eischen’s Bar for their famous fried chicken featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. CC and I also managed a lunch at Spencers BBQ and one (or two) at Braums. And last but not least, no visit to Oklahoma would be complete without a meal at Hideaway Pizza. CC and I both gained a few pounds as we dined on our favorites, and re-connected with friends from our youth. Thanks to all. We can only hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The Dometic refrigerator has been giving us a “ER 13” flashing code for the past few weeks. After researching it, I discovered that more than likely it is a bad heating element in the freezer defroster drain tube. I called Lee’s RV in OKC to see if they would be able to order the part and install it. The first question they asked was if I bought the MH from them, to which I replied, “no”. Immediately they said it would be mid-November before they could look at it. Well, OK then. Since we are headed south, I found and authorized Dometic dealer in San Antonio, aptly named San Antonio RV, and called them to inquire about the possibility of fixing the refer. After a brief conversation with Allen, he said he would call Dometic and call me back. A few days later he called and said he had the part, and to just call him when we arrived in san Antonio. That was easy; the way it should be.

We left Oklahoma City on Wednesday, and traveled 220 miles SW to Childress, TX, to spend some time with CC’s daughter, Letta and her husband Billy. CC’s grandson, Lane, is living and working about 4-5 hours away in Andrews, TX, so the verdict is still out on whether or not he will show up to give CC a neck hug.

From here, we will head south. No definite route planned, and that’s the way we like it. Until next time, take care and stay well………………..

October 4 – 9, 2011 “Pheasant onto Glass”

After a wonderful month in Colorado, we departed CherryCreek State Park on Tuesday morning. When we started the engine, I noticed an unusual sound of a small motor emanating from the front of the rig, so I unlatched the generator compartment to take a look see. The source of the noise was quickly and easily identified as a vacuum pump; but why was it running constantly? Before we hit the road, I decided it was probably prudent if we stopped at RV America in Aurora and got it diagnosed. The service manager took one look and listen, and said the motor would stop running when we got to a lower altitude where the air wasn’t as thin. He was correct. Soon after crossing into Kansas the pump quit running constantly. We learn something new every day on this adventure.

We made it the 340 miles to Hays, KS, arriving about 6:00 pm. After provisioning at Wally World, we declared this the “first boondocking” in the new rig. The next morning we topped off the diesel with 84 gallons at $3.53 per gallon, and headed eastward on I-70 shortly after 8 am.

In the 30+ years we have traveled this route, there has ALWAYS been road construction, and this trip would be no different, as the road narrowed to 2 lanes just east of Russell, and the speed limit reduced to 60. I had my hands full trying to avoid orange construction cones, coupled with a 25 mph side wind hitting us broadside, at times almost forcing me into oncoming traffic.

EXTREMELY LOUD "POP !!!"

The only thing CC saw, out of the corner of her eye, was a bird flying, and then “Wham”. As we slowed to 50 mph, I wondered IF the windshield would stay intact until we got to Salina. Luckily for us, it did, as we gingerly drove the 30 miles to Safelite for a closer and professional inspection. Matt, the service manager, told us we were the third vehicle this week that has come in after hitting a pheasant. He also said the windshield “would probably hold together” but if we got stopped by a Kansas State Trooper, they would more than likely ticket us AND not let us drive it until the windshield was replaced.

I had that “Have you ever been to Vegas?” feeling, "How lucky do you feel?"; not sure if that’s bad or good, as I once again looked around for Murphy. We called our insurance company, and the soonest they could arrange for a replacement windshield in Salina was 3 days. Our other option, limp on for 250 miles into Oklahoma City, straight south into 25-35 mph head winds. This time, CC and I both looked around for that Irish lad, and he was nowhere to be found. So…………………next stop Oklahoma City, providing our Guardian Angel was present and up for the task.

We decided to bypass the Kansas Turnpike from Wichita to the Oklahoma border, knowing there are usually one or more State Troopers at the gate. Keeping our speed between 50 and 55, coupled with the head winds, was the equivalent force on the windshield of driving 75 – 90 mph. We finally arrived at Twin Fountains RV Park in Oklahoma City around 6:30 pm. Thank you GA!

We’ll be here for a couple of weeks visiting family and friends. CC is having one-on-one time with her Mom, under the guise of helping her clean house. (Translation for us guys: Girl talk and shopping)

September 18 - October 3, 2011 "Cherry Creek State Park CO"

After returning from Powell, we needed some R&R. For those of you that have been, understand, and for those of you that haven’t, it’s no cake walk. Actually it took only a few days to unpack, clean, and store the items that won’t be used until next year, but one has to ask the question “Is it worth it?”

CC has been busy reuniting with old friends and workplace associates, with the customary lunches and happy hours. Since we only have one vehicle, while she has been whooping it up until the wee hours of the morning, I’ve had my nose to the grindstone, re-arranging the basement and eliminating duplicate (or semi-duplicate) items. After 3 trips to Wally World for plastic storage trays, I can now declare the basement “tolerable and manageable”.

While here in the Denver Area, we have also been invited by friends Tom and Leslie for a Mexican Fiesta dinner complete with the best damn margarita ever. Dave and Jeannie offered up some “Q” from Tony’s and also imbibed on a few adult beverages. Fellow Goldwingers and RV’ers Ed and Bev visited us in Elizabeth. Our old neighbors Gary and Michelle, along with their 2 kids, (German Shorthaired Pointers, Cash and Windy) joined us for simple, and slightly overcooked burgers and Michelle’s homemade brownies. Another friend, Jeanne, from the "hood" stopped by for a visit and a chance to catch up on what has happened since we moved. To all, a heartfelt thank you. We enjoyed every minute of our visit, and value deeply your friendships.

Rick and Zoe cut off our electricity in Elizabeth, due to non-payment of rent, forcing us to move to Cherry Creek State Park. (Not really…..just kidding……but they did threaten to…. Really….Would I BS you?)

On Friday morning, Rick and Zoe joined us at the campground in their motorhome. (I personally think they felt bad about forcing us to move, and were just trying to make amends….Really) Later in the day James and Jenna arrived, and later that evening Steve and Penny pulled in, to totally disparage me and my synopsis of the situation. So, ...... this had been planned(?); imagine that! With that said, only one thing to do; Party On! All pictures and videos of the weekend were destroyed, to protect the innocent(?). All kidding aside, we had a great time and truly enjoy the company and friendships of the "innocent".

Our plans for the next couple of weeks are to move southward to Oklahoma, to visit CC’s mom, and to catch up with old friends there. I’m not ready to move, as the weather here has been just perfect; highs in the 80’s with lows in the 50’s. (Perfect for getting your sleep on!) But as the old adage reminds us, “All good things must come to an end”. So with that……………….

September 1 - 17, 2011 "Lake Powell"

It seems like it’s been a month since our last posting on the blog; it almost has been. Soon after our arrival in Elizabeth at Rick and Zoe’s, they invited us to join them for a vacation on their houseboat at Lake Powell (LP). So, while Rick went bow hunting for elk the first weekend of the month, we were busy shopping for food and preparing as many meals as possible, to eliminate time in the kitchen while at LP. There would be 4 adults and 6 young adults (Ages 19-23) on the trip, and I had not prepared a meal for that many in a few years, so needless to say, this was going to be a challenge. OK. 7 days x 3 meals/day = 21 meals. “Zoe, have you prepared a menu?” “Yes”, she replied. Thank God.

On to the store, and back in the kitchen, we prepared 6 pounds of BBQ pulled beef brisket for sandwiches. Used Nana’s recipe to make 1 ground beef, and 1 sausage and mushroom lasagna (ended up being enough for 2 meals, as I made 2 – 13” x 9” pans with 4 layers each) for Italian night. Concocted 3 pounds of taco meat for Taco Tuesday. Did 3 pounds of sloppy joes for ??? night and/or lunch. Chopped, diced, and mixed 4 pounds of pasta salad for lunch, and/or a side dish. Fried 4 pounds of bacon (breakfast and BLT’s for lunch) and 3 pounds of sausage patties for breakfasts. Made 12 breakfast burritos and 12 Egg McMuffins. Am I done yet? Oh yea. Vacuum seal all of the above and freeze. The remainder of the meals were prepared on the boat, as it’s difficult to pre-cook steaks, pork tenderloin, hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, and be pleased with the results.

When Rick informed us we would be departing on Saturday morning at 4 am, I almost threw in the towel. Didn’t he know we were retired and 4 am is when we get our best sleep? CC convinced me that it wouldn’t kill me to be up before the roosters, and to quit whining and just do it. (No advertisement for Nike intended or implied) We finally departed shortly after 6 am for the 8 – 9 hour drive to Bullfrog Marina on LP.

We arrived at Bullfrog around 3:30 pm, and began unpacking the vehicles to transfer the metric ton or more of food, soft drinks, beer, ice, and luggage the 10 of us had, and began the arduous task of loading the boat, the Canyon Explorer. By 6:30, we were all ready for an adult beverage, minors and prego excluded. Dinner consisted of BBQ pulled pork sandwiches. (As usual, click on any image to enlarge)

Sunday morning, the First Mate, Zoe, decided we should venture southward to the San Juan Arm of LP (between channel marker 57 & 58); a distance of 40 – 50 miles. The views were amazing, and the panorama impressive. Traveling at the breakneck speed of 6 mph, towing the 3 water toys, would take us most of the day.

It was with a steady hand we were carefully guided down the Colorado River by Captain “Hank” and First Mate, Zoe, at the upper helm of the Canyon Explorer (CE).

Shortly before 6 pm we beached the CE, and Justin, Garret and Jobi secured the vessel with 4 lines to the shore. While the adults enjoyed an adult beverage, they also prepared a gourmet meal of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. After dark, Justin, “The Great White Hunter”, went in search of the elusive, deadly, white scorpion, known to inhabit the area. A short time later he emerged from the darkness, prey in hand.

Monday, it was decided that we should dispatch a scout party to search for a better campsite, preferably off the main channel. With that task in hand, it was all hands on deck, as Jobi and Alicia ventured off on the wave runner, while Justin and Rebecca varoomed off in the 502 Mag “Red Dog”, leaving Garret and prego Jessie, to pilot the Conroy in their pursuit of the “ultimate” campsite. Within 2 hours, we were on the move, and lucky for us, it was only a few miles down the canyon. Upon arrival, it was time to unwind on the swim island, wave runner, or just do some leisurely “Hillbilly Deluxe” fishin’.

That evening, the winds picked up, and although grilled pork tenderloin was on the menu, the weather was not cooperating, so it was Plan B, salad, garlic bread and lasagna. Add a glass of vino, and it was a superb dining experience. The young adults partied until late and finally decided on sleeping under the stars on the upper deck sometime after midnight.

DID YOU SEE THAT? ……..GET HIM!……… THERE HE GOES!…….With that the adults were shockingly awakened. The “kids” were running around like screamin’ banshees about a wild animal on the boat, and as testerone would have it, the 3 young males mounted a “moonlight hunt” in search of the elusive intruder. Under light of day, it was determined “The Intruder” to be a Ring Tailed Cat. Seems as if someone had left the ramp down, and it just walked right up on the boat to take a look see.

Since it was Tuesday, it must be Taco Tuesday. Right you are; not only tacos, but burritos, refried beans, chips and salsa, margaritas, cerveza fria, and even a shot or two of Centenario Agave Anejo Tequila. It was a fiesta for sure, and after dinner we all turned in early. NOT. Once again, the young adults partied into the wee hours and finally decided on sleeping on the upper deck sometime after midnight???.

Have we had enough excitement yet? I thought this was supposed to be a relaxing trip? Actually, the next day, Wednesday, was rainy and overcast, and too cool to be in the water, so we mostly just relaxed, read, consumed a few cerveza fria, and in general tried to recharge our partially depleted personas.

Thursday morning, Captain “Hank” decided it might be best if we moved a few miles upriver, to make the travel day back to Bullfrog a little shorter. So with that, the orders were given to “weigh anchor”, and the shipmates went into action. Within an hour, we were streaking along at a blistering 6 mph. In a little over 2 hours, we arrived at our new campsite near channel marker 67. Thursday was designated as “Steak Night”, and so it was that salad, steak and baked potatoes were enjoyed by all. It will come as no surprise that the young adults, once again, partied until ???? It’s been awhile since I was that age, but don’t remember hitting it that hard for that many days in a row. CC tells me that I’m just getting old.

Travel day Friday. Since check in time for the boat was 10 am on Saturday morning, it was necessary to be at Bullfrog Marina Friday night to unload and clean the boat before the time of check in. So, after a leisurely breakfast, we weighed anchor at set off for the trip up the channel. Captain “Hank” piloted the CE solo, while the remaining crew went on a sightseeing excursion in Red Dog and Conroy; first stop, the Anasazi Ruins in Escalante Canyon.

Next stop, La Gorce Arch; a beautiful arch on the Escalante Arm of Lake Powell. When the lake water level is high, you can pilot a small houseboat up this far. The arch is visible from both front and back, and so is one of the most photographed arches on Lake Powell.

Since it was now around 2:30 pm, and we told Captain “Hank” we would meet up with him around 3, we headed up the channel where we caught him around marker 83. After securing the water toys, we continued to Bullfrog, arriving about 6:30 pm. Dinner theme tonight? Garbage night; eat up leftovers. And right you are, the young adults once again did their thing.

Saturday morning, everyone was up and at it by 7 am: packing, unloading, and cleaning, readying the boat for the 10 am check in. It was actually closer to 11 when that process was complete, as we prepared for the 9 hour drive back to Elizabeth.

All in all, it was a good trip. Not once did we need the first aid kit, and the only items that were missed the entire trip;..................... $49 and some toenail polish remover for those "cute tootsies".

August 25 – 31, 2011 “Our New Home”

We received a few inquires as to what is involved in the installation of a ceiling fan, and what the cost of the MCD shades were. The short answer is, they were included in the price of our new motorhome; a one owner 2010 Itasca Ellipse 42AD with only 4,100 miles on her, aptly named “Elly”.

Since we were impersonating “The Jefferson’s”, we also decided it was time to upgrade our toad to something with better fuel economy, a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox that is rated 22 in town, and 32 on the highway, almost double the MPG of the Jeep Wrangler.

Purchasing a new automobile is definitely NOT one of my favorite pastimes, but I was pleasantly surprised how easy this purchase was. I have had a GM MasterCard for 20+ years, and had accumulated almost $3,000 in earnings. GM places limits on each of their models, and on the Equinox it was $1,000. When the sales manager took my card to apply my earnings to the purchase price, he returned asking me, “Did you know you were a “World” member?” Sure, I replied (but hadn’t a clue exactly what that meant). He said, “You can use ALL of your earnings toward the purchase, if you’d like”. Now, where I come from, that’s called a no brainer. (Click on any image to enlarge)

Followers of our blog realize we have been searching for a diesel pusher and something more comfortable, since we live in our rig full time. What caused us to bite the bullet and move up? Well, it was a combination of things. One, a fellow full timer of one year, just like us, commented that he bought his third rig first; a 2010 Tiffin Allegro Bus. That got me thinking about the concept. Secondly, saving $80K on this 2010 versus the 2012 42AD, we picked out at the Winnebago Rally last month. And lastly, the unit was barely used. The speedcook oven, cooktop, outside entertainment center, Kingdome in-motion satellite system, and 2 of the 4 TV’s had never been used, as the original owner had only used it 4 times.

It only took us 3 days to move in to the new rig, and the time it took for Chevy to order and install a new base plate and receiver (for the bikes) on the Equinox was 5 days. Leach RV had almost a week to fix the little things we noticed that weren’t right, move the brake and light systems from the Jeep to the Equinox, and do the final detail, which included waxing and topping off the diesel and propane. So………..... After being in Lincoln for 2 weeks, we finally departed.

The trip across Nebraska in I-80 was like floating on air. The air bag suspension, coupled with the 400 HP Cummins, kept the ride soft and the noise in the rear; neither of which we were accustomed to in the Suncruiser. CC and I each commented that this rig, 4 feet longer that the Cruiser, didn’t handle like it was bigger at all. Do I have buyer’s remorse? Not at all. Do I think we overspent? Anytime money leaves my hands it causes me redefine our plans for retirement and this lifestyle. Are we happy with our decision? So far, so good. If momma's happy, everyone's happy.

We arrived at Tom and Trudy’s in Cheyenne, WY, around 4 pm, and were set up by the time they got home from work. They have a wonderful home on 2 acres they built about 7 years ago.

Complete with a 40 foot by 60 foot “pole barn”, as Tom refers to it, where he houses all of his “toys”; 4 motorcycles, a boat, 2 trailers, and their “baby”. I think everyone with a motorhome needs a “pole barn”, don’t you?

We had a wonderful visit, and it was great to catch up with old friends. One thing life has taught me; when you re-aquaint with good friends, time spent apart seems to disappear, and you resume just like you had seen each other yesterday. Thanks Tom & Trudy, for everything!

From Cheyenne, we bolted down I-25 to our old stomping grounds around Denver, CO. CC pushed that big rig right through downtown and out to the “burbs”, where we arrived at our friends, Rick and Zoe, just outside of Elizabeth, CO, about 50 miles SE of Denver.

We will be in the Denver area for the month of September. Only a brief side trip to Lake Powell on the tenth, for 7 days on Rick and Zoe’s houseboat, and then back in the Mile Hi City for the remainder of the month. We have doctor appointments, haircuts, and hopefully a few lunches and/or dinners with friends here in the area. As CC said as she piloted the rig down I-25, it’s good to be home. I couldn’t agree more.

August 14 - 24 "New Ceiling Fan"

We are currently in Lincoln, NE. CC thought we needed a ceiling fan in our bedroom, so we called Leach RV, and they were only too happy to oblige.

After seeing how good the fan looked and worked, CC decided that MCD shades would be a nice addition to our home on wheels. These had to be ordered, so we just hung out for a few days, seeing the sights in Lincoln.

August 3 - 14, 2011 "Madison, WI to Omaha, NE"

The drive to Madison was uneventful, thankfully, and we checked into Smokey Hollow Campground. This is the most unique RV Park we have seen, with more rides and attractions for the kids, more like a mini-amusement park than a campground. The “swimmin’ hole” has numerous floating attractions for kids of all ages, even a “dunk tank” for those interested in evening the score with a friendly foe. (Click on any image to enlarge)

The owner is quite the “inventor”, and has several motorized rides, including Cinderella’s Pumpkin, and this oversized shopping cart.

Adjacent to the jumping pillow, there is a volleyball court and a water balloon wars arcade, complete with a fill station for buckets and balloons.

The owner left this as it was “planted”(?) a few years ago, about 10-11 feet off the ground, in hopes other drivers of RV’s would notice and take extra precaution in preventing it from happening to them. (That ornery Murphy again; he certainly gets around.)

We departed the campground to meet with Duncan Industries at a nearby Hampton Inn for our scheduled window repairs. All the way, we kept our fingers crossed that this time, the third try, they would, as Larry the Cable Guy says, “Git ur dun”. Guess what? Murphy is absent, and we are now with clear, sealed windows. Finally.

Since it was about 7:30 pm when they completed their work, we decided to boondock at Wally World; a first for us. We picked up some fried chicken from the deli for dinner, and hit the rack about 10 pm.

Depart Madison, WI, for Moscow, IA, to the HWH plant where hopefully they can find and repair that pesky little leak we have in our hydraulic leveling/slide-out system. A few miles after we got on I-80 west, we noticed a sign that read, “World’s Largest Truck Stop – Next Exit”………….so we did, cause we can.

We thought about our trucking buddies from Country Sunshine, Cool Whip and Lena, aka, Carl and Kenny. (That’s no typo, I said trucking.) Both were career men with Yellow Freight, and now we were about to step into their world. CC would not be denied, as she climbed up into that big rig.

Back on the road and arrived at HWH about 1 pm. Without an appointment, they said it would most likely be tomorrow before they could work us in. No problem, as they have 9 spots with electric. We were told to just go back into any one available, kick back and take it easy until tomorrow; so we did. We had just finished setting up, when we heard a knock on the door. Murphy, is that you? No, it was Troy with HWH to tell us they were ready for us. OK, tear down and wait for repairs. We’re getting good at this. Shortly before 3:30, Troy reappeared and said we were done; he replaced a bad fitting on one of the hoses. $95 later we were out the door.

After we hooked up the toad, we did the customary light check and walk around. I noticed some oil dripping from the area that was just repaired. So………..back inside I ventured to speak to customer service. It was almost 4 pm, and all the technicians had left for the day, but they paged Bill, one of the supervisors, to come in and discuss my options. Bill said, “Let’s take a look at it”. He proceeded to crawl under the rig, on the gravel parking lot, to diagnose the source of the leak; another bad fitting. Within 30 minutes he replaced the bad part, and we were on our way. Hooray…..all those little nit pikin’ items are now fixed and off our list; Ms. Sol Crucero is as good as new. It felt good to have all that behind us.

It was another night boondocking at Wally World, another first for us; dry camping for 2 days in a row. We are saving some big bucks I tell ya. LOL ;-)

The following morning we were up before the sun, and made an early departure, in route to the Omaha area to visit CC’s friend Dixie, who lives nearby. We checked into the Bluff Run Casino RV Park, and called it a trip. Now, CC has itchy fingers, and will most likely drop a few quarters in one or two video poker machines. Who knows, if her feminine intuitions are right on, and she hits the jackpot, our decision, at least financially, to go ahead and move up to a bigger rig, will be an easy one to make.

From here, we will continue our westerly way to Cheyenne, WY, to visit longtime friends, Tom and Trudy. Until next time, take care and stay well………………………………..

August 2, 2011 "More Murphy"

Over stimulated with sensory and memory overload; that is the way I would describe our last two weeks. After our bout with Murphy, things improved, albeit marginally.

CC and I are thinking about going back to work so we can get some rest, and return to a “normal” life; On second thought, maybe not. It takes real intestinal fortitude to live this lifestyle, and we are not quitters, so we must carry on. I cannot begin to write about everything we have experienced since our last posting, but it has been educational, in a good sort of way.

The Rally was hot and humid, with seminars held in large tents. Heat indexes were triple digits every day. We attended classes presented by Cummins, Michelin, A&E awnings, HWH Leveling Systems, Winnebago Electrical Systems, Fulltiming 101, WIT Tours, and others I cannot recall due to cranial heating and overload. CC participated in the WOW (Women on Wheels) Driving School, and was invited to teach at next years Rally. Double WOW.

Winnebago offered a “Sign and Drive”, so CC and I signed up to test drive a 2012 Tour 42AD with the 450hp Cummins. We were both impressed with the drivability and the smooth comfortable ride, not to mention the floor plan. Over the next few days we discussed moving up to a new diesel pusher, and decided to price one out, just the way we wanted, including options, interior and exterior colors, fabrics and counter material. Very nice, and the price? Triple WOW!!!!! We are still trying to justify a purchase of this magnitude, given our experience with the Winnebago Service Center. Had our experience there been less painful, the decision to purchase a new one would have definitely been easier. We’re still on the fence. (Click on image to enlarge.)

Evenings were also hot and humid, but we managed to attend a few “Happy Hours’, hosted by the 365 Club, Florida WIT, and row parties. Evening entertainment was provided every night from 7 pm until 9 pm. We did attend 3 evening performances, but usually we were so hot and sticky, all we wanted to do was hit the shower, and cool off in the rig.

While all of this was going on, we had the rig back into the Winnebago Service twice. So, on the days of service, it was up early, tear down, and move the rig from the Rally grounds to service. Waiting and more waiting for them to complete the work in this oppressive heat. What is that I hear? Sounds like Murphy. Wrong part? Oh, come back in 3 days, you say. Back to the Rally and set up. Three days later, repeat the process. Check.

Duncan Industries was at the Rally, repairing windows. Since we had two with broken seals, we signed up. Long, long story short; didn’t happen, and our options are to drive back to Elkhart, IN, or meet them in Madison, WI in two weeks, where they will be attending the Family Motor Coach Association Rally.

We will take a break from all the stimuli, and just recoup and recharge at a sleepy little campground in Eastern Iowa; Lake Shores RV Resort. Not too bad, as the Passport America rate is $18 per day with no restrictions. From here, we're Madison bound; Murphy-less if at all possible.

July 8 - 16, 2011 "Murphy"

No one likes to start their trip with aggravation, but with Murphy, anything is possible. We got ready to roll and during our pre-departure light check, CC noticed a damaged wheel on her bike. I looked at it, and the only thing I could imagine was one of the too many golf carts in the campground had run into the rear wheel, so it was off to the office to file a report. After filling out the paperwork, CC got this astonished look on her face, and said to the campground ranger, “Can we take your golf cart over to our campsite?” When they returned, I got the rest of the story. It seems that while backing the Jeep out of the campsite, she backed into a lamp post. We definitely had egg on our face and offered to pay for any damages. The owner inspected the post and said, “Your bike got the worst of it. It’s no problem; we’ll just tighten the screws, and thanks for being honest.” (Click on any image to enlarge)

We departed Wauseon, Ohio for La Porte, Indiana, and decided to stop at the RV Museum and Hall of Fame located just outside of Elkhart, IN, and we’re glad we did. We’re on a tight schedule, but we decided this was one stop we just had to see, considering our chosen lifestyle. It seems ironic, that one of the largest Amish settlements is located in this part of Indiana, considering they still ride in horse drawn buggies. The irony is many of them work at the numerous RV factories located here.

We finally departed for our trip to the Amana Colonies just outside of Amana, Iowa, and also the birthplace of the Amana Corporation. This is one of those places, about 10 miles north of I-80, many people just pass up, and keep driving. We found the place fascinating. Take the time to click on the link above, and if you’re ever in the area stop by; the people are VERY friendly.

Once inside, I was in heaven. My grandfather was not only a butcher, but a German one at that. It was like being a kid again, going to work with him. Let’s see what we need. Double smoked bacon, smoked sausages (6), smoked pepper jack cheese, smoked pork chops, pickled garlic, pickled asparagus spears, horseradish jelly; yea that should just about do it.

While staying at the Amana Colonies campground, we heard the sound of barking dogs, from 7 am to about 7 pm. CC and I were out walking, and we asked if there was a dog show at the pavilion in the park. “No”, they replied, “It’s a Flyball meet”. OK, I’ll bite, what the hell is Flyball. Watch the video below to find out, but only if you need a good laugh. The owners of the dogs are sometimes funnier than the dogs themselves.

When CC and I embarked on this adventure, we were both cognizant of the fact that most likely Murphy’s Law would be a small part of our travels; whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Picture this, a 30,000 pound house on wheels rolling along for miles and miles, in the midst of a magnitude 3.5 earthquake. Something’s gotta give.

Over the last 14 months of driving on America’s roads, the only real information I have is the economic stimulus plan, to fund “shovel ready” projects, has not been used on the highways, as PROMISED. (Imagine that?)……. A logical person would assume that the Interstate System would have better roads than local, state or US highways. Let me assure you, this is NOT the case. OK, I feel better now that I have that off my chest. Back to shake rattle and roll.

We are finally in Forest City, Iowa; the home of Winnebago Industries and builder of our Itasca Suncruiser. A few weeks ago, I called and tried to set up and appointment to get our list of issues/repairs taken care of. I was told no appointments were available for July due to the Winnebago-Itasca Grand National Rally, which we are attending, and the first available appointment was August 15. OK then, August 15 it is.

We arrived in Forest City on Monday, July 11, and after talking to other attendees, were informed we could get into the service center simply by going and setting up an appointment, as during July, they operate on a walk in basis, first come, first served, but limit you to just 7 items to be repaired or replaced. Not an easy task, since Monday afternoon when we pulled in the campground, and were setting up, we had an accident when extending one of the living room slides and broke the vertical trim that encases the slide. (Gotta remember to check for clearances before extending or retacting those slides.) Add another one to the list. Remember Murphy? Hmmmm, now to go through our list of 14 and prioritize the top 7.

We hustled over to the service center at 7 am Tuesday, and were told we could most likely get in Wednesday. Great! That was easy enough. Winnebago has a staggered service schedule. You are either assigned a 6 am or 6:30 am time slot to have your rig at the service center, and the technicians begin work at 7 am. They also have a 9:30 am and 11:30 am “Stand By” which means they MIGHT get to your rig. Every day at 3 pm, they post the list of times for appointments for the next day. We were assigned 9:30 am. Oh well, at least we can sleep in.

Wednesday 11:00 am. Finally met with Larry our service advisor and went over our list of 7 items, and were told to be close just in case they needed to speak with us, so just hung out the day at the service center with the 30 or 40 other people in for work. At 3 pm they brought the rig around, and we went over the items they had completed. 1) Replaced weather-strip on one of the slides. 2) Remove and install window retainer ring that was improperly installed when the rig was originally built. 3) Replace electrical relay on hot water tank so it would operate on 110V. (We had been using the LP to heat water.) “What about the slide needing adjustment”, I asked Larry. To which he replied, “It’s already been adjusted to the max, so the slide may need to be replaced.” I said, “Oh yea, why is that?” He said, “I’ll have more information tomorrow.” OK, 3 out of 7 in a half a day, I thought to myself. We were told to be back at 6 am the following morning, and told we could overnight in the adjacent lot where 30 amp services were available.

Remember Murphy? Around 7 am Thursday morning Larry informed me the slide would need to be replaced with a new improved forged steel slide to replace the extruded aluminum one, to the tune of $3,500 - $4,000. When I asked him who was going to cover that cost, he told me he would check with his boss, Bernie. About 30 minutes later, Larry came out and said we were responsible for the cost of the repair since it was out of warranty. I asked to speak to Bernie, and waited patiently until 1:30 PM when Bernie emerged from his well fortified office. I proceeded to explain that I thought it was a design – engineering – manufacturing defect and that we should, at the very least, split the cost 50-50. Furthermore Winnebago must have realized there was a flaw, otherwise they wouldn’t have made the replacement stronger than the original. Again Bernie repeated, it is out of warranty. I told him he was really making it easy on us to make a positive buying decision on a new Winnebago if this was the attitude of customer service, to which he replied, “You gotta do what you gotta do”, and turned on his heels to return to his office. To say I was not happy, would be an understatement.

Around 3 pm they brought the rig out, and Larry went over the repairs of the day, less the slide. 1) Repair duct work on basement air that was partially blocked by broken/dislodged insulation. 2) Met with the Norcold rep to determine why our refrigerator was not cooling properly. (I thought it was an intake problem, that the intake was too small for a 4 door refrigerator.) Remember Murphy? I was told it was the correct vent size and the unit was cooling “within specifications”. 3) The dash A/C needed recharging but a leak in the dryer was noticed, so it will be tomorrow when they can get the part. OK, the end of day 2, and only 3 items have been repaired. Back to the adjacent lot for the night where I replaced the 2 high rear tail lights on the back of the rig, and two door hinges damaged in the slide incident on Monday.

Friday, 6 am day 3. Larry told us the new part was to be delivered by 10 am, so I’m thinking we’ll be outta here by noon. Murphy, where are you? 11:30 am, Bernie called on my cell phone, as I don’t think he wanted another face to face with me, only to inform me the part they received, was the wrong one, and a new one won’t be available until next Wednesday. Oh, there you are Murphy. With that bit o’information, we moved back to our spot on the rally campgrounds. Can you see us in the photo below?

While here at the Rally Campground, I have arranged with Duncan Industries to repair/replace 2 windows in the rig with broken seals. (One actually has about 2” of water between the dual panes.) The replacement trim for the slide incident should be ready next week. After the rally we will be going to HWH for them to correct some leveling issues we have had with the automatic hydraulic leveling system. At this point, there is no way I want Winnebago to work on a vendored item. The wind sensor in the awning still doesn’t appear to be working properly, but I will address that with Carefree when we get to Colorado, as it is also a vendored part.

CC and I are looking forward to the rally this week and absorbing as much technical information as we can possibly soak up. We have already met some wonderful, friendly campers, and have been to several “happy hours” without Murphy. So…………………….

July 2 - 7, 2011 "The Bridges of Ashtabula County"

Since reading the book, The Bridges of Madison County, CC has been captivated by this architectural anomaly; each one, uniquely different. Pennsylvania boasts the most of any state, and it is reported that the Amish from that area brought the concept with them as they migrated westward. While we were staying at Kennisee Lakes just outside of Jefferson, Ohio, we discovered that Ashtabula County has a total of 17 covered bridges, and so it was, a day of exploration was a must do. Each bridge has a “badge”,that describes the statistics of that bridge. What amazed me was the fact that there seems to be no “standards” for this type of construction. No minimum or maximum on widths, heights, clearances or lengths. It appears the bridge designer has complete artistic freedom to design in any way, shape, fashion or form he chooses.

Most of America's covered bridges were built between 1825 and 1875. By the 1870s, most bridges were covered at the time of construction. The original reason for the cover was to protect the bridge's trusses and decks from snow and rain, preventing decay and rot. The cover served other purposes also-it kept horses from being spooked by the waters underneath, it was a reprieve from weather to the weary traveler, and it was used for political rallies, religious meetings, a night's sleep for tramps, town meetings, poker parties, sweethearts' rendezvous, drunken revels, dances, and even rainy-day luncheons took place on the covered bridge. An uncovered bridge would last approximately 20 years but a covered one could last 100 years.

The Graham Road Bridge, which was built from remnants of a bridge washed downstream in the 1913 flood, now sits in a small park on the south side of the road. The 97-foot Town Truss was over the west branch of the Ashtabula River in Pierpont Township.

The people of Ashtabula County truly embrace their covered bridges, and are determined to keep the concept, and to some degree, the culture of such alive for future generations. New bridges are being built using the same design concepts and principals of the past.

We will now be making our way to the Winnebago Itasca Grand National Rally in Forest City, Iowa, that runs from July 17 – 22. I think we both just realized how far we must travel to get there, so will double up our travel plans and move at the speed of light, around 100 miles per day, which will drastically alter our sightseeing agenda. Oh well, it’s a tough lifestyle we lead, so please don’t try this if you are faint of heart.

2010 - 2011 Budget "1st Year Average Expenses"

The final numbers are in for our first full year of living this full time RV lifestyle. When we started this adventure, I had some idea of expenses, based on our lifestyle in our "stix & brix", but had to "guesstimate" at what to budget for others. My crystal ball has been broken for years, so it all boiled down to doing the research and crunching numbers. And while we came in under budget, which is something our elected officials should take notice of, there are areas that I'm sure we can improve. (As usual, click on image to enlerge)

These past 3 months have proven expensive, and they drastically altered our budget. As numbers don't lie, to live this lifestyle entirely in the East, would easily cost 20% - 30% more than our combined average of living mainly in the Midwest.

Just why it is more costly in the East, is a combination of things. Gas is more expensive, largely because most of the refineries are along the Gulf coast. Toll roads and bridges are the norm here. Campground fees are higher because most are only open for 6 - 8 months, so they have to cover their annual expenses in a shortened camping season. EVERYTHING in NY is more expensive, due to their tax rate and belief that everything but air needs to be taxed, which most likely is on the horizion. While shopping at Wally World in NY, we noticed the price of cigarettes at $10.95 per pack, while at the duty free along the border they were $2.40; that is one helluva tax. Not that I smoke, but only to point out the extent of their taxes in New York. The toll to cross the bridge into Manhattan is now $8.00.

While our RV expenses were under budget, that will no doubt change later this month as we are headed to Forest City, Iowa for the Winnebago Itasca National Rally, and have scheduled several services to be done on the rig while there.

For those of you contemplating this lifestyle, and are in the process of gathering budget information, there are several areas where we could trim, if necessary. We both have cell phones and the air card for internet access; we could easily trim one of the cell phones. Dining out/Groceries/Libations could be cut in half IF we ate in all the time, instead of eating out for lunch while we are out "sightseeing". DirecTV is a want and not a need. Jeep expenses are high, largely because it only gets 15 - 18 mpg, and we do like to explore the areas we are visiting. A more fuel efficent "toad" would easily trim $100 per month.

We are laid up in Wauseon, OH for the 4th of July. CC is not impressed, but it's not that bad. As I tried to explain to her, we've stayed in worst. So with that said, we wish you all a safe and happy 4th of July. Until next time, take care and stay well............................

If you have been following us for the past 3 or 4 months, you already know that we have visited many of the historical sites that helped form our great nation; some inspiring, others devastating. But the one common thread was they are what shaped and formed our homeland.

During our journey, CC and I have witnessed a vast amount of knowledge, history, geography and had human interaction with persons of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. While this blog is in no way a political statement or platform, in keeping with our mission statement of finding "obscure diamonds in the rough", the following article summed up our travel observations of the past 3 months. June 13 - 20, 2011 "Florida (NY) to Niagara Falls, NY"

The tour bus picked us up at the rig at 7:45 am, and it was off to the Big Apple. A few minutes later we were solidly in the middle of a traffic jam that took nearly an hour to clear, so our arrival time in NYC was 10:15 am, and we were soon standing in Times Square. Next stop; Ground Zero. Words alone cannot describe the emotional feeling of standing on the same ground that cost over 3,000 Americans their lives, at the hands of lunatic religious zealots, that have no respect for human life, no matter how strong their tainted beliefs are. Partial justice has been served, thanks to our well trained Navy SEALS, but we, as Americans, should not rest, until all of those responsible for this cowardly, evil act are brought to justice.

The cross is an actual piece of the World Trade Center, and on the left side is an actual piece of one of the ill-fated planes. It will stand as a reminder for generations to come, of the worst terrorist attack on US soil since Pearl Harbor, and for those old enough to remember, the outcome of that cowardly action involved the Enola Gay.

Liberty State Park, on the shores of New Jersey, acted as a morgue in the days following 9/11, where family members would come and pick up the remains of loved ones. To think back, in the early 1900’s, this was the site that LEGAL immigrants departed via train, after they were admitted into the US from Ellis Island; what a dichotomy.

After going through TSA security, we boarded the ferry for the short ride to Ellis Island. (Leave those knives, fingernail files, and tweezers at home, if you want to keep them.)

Another short ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island. I had not been here since 1965, and was surprised to learn that if one wanted to go to the top of Miss Liberty, a special ticket was needed. No extra cost involved, but reservations need to be made months in advance, as only a few hundred visitors a day are allowed into the crown. Why are there seven points on the crown? Pop quiz to follow.

Back on the bus at 5:30 pm, we arrived back at Black Bear Campground shortly before 7 pm. The cost for all of this, you asked? A mere $90 per person, with our super informative and funny tour guide, Al Kaufman.

Today we traveled from Black Bear, via I-17, to Endicott, NY, not only the home of IBM, but our new home as well, at Pine Valley Campground. Aaahhhhhh!!!! I needed this. Initially we had planned on staying for two nights, but the weather and scenery were so perfect, we extended for two more. We both agreed, this little campground was really a diamond in the rough, and we can highly recommend it to anyone; as close to a 10 as we have found.

After a day of R&R, we ventured to Watkins Glen. CC and I were both amazed at the numerous waterfalls cascading down the gorge.

We then proceeded to tour a few of the 34 wineries located on the hillsides of beautiful Lake Seneca. After stopping and doing some wine tasting, and purchased a few bottles, we departed for the 90 minute drive back to our home. Since I was the designated driver, I sampled, but did not swallow; I left that task to CC. (OK Carl, Rick, Dave, Terry or George; no comments on that last statement. This blog is Rated RV-13)

Travel days come too quickly, but we have places to go and people to see. We departed Endicott via I-17 in route to Niagara Falls, and got set up at our new home for the next few days, the AA Motel and Campground. (Definitely NOT a 10, but one of the closest RV parks to the Falls in the area, and NOT a bargain at $49.95 per night for 30 amp service)

We decided on the four hour tour of Niagara Falls that departed at 5:30 pm, and doing so would give CC the opportunity to see the falls illuminated at night. I think I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

June 7 - 12, 2011 "Atlantic City to Florida (NY)"

We departed Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville, VA at 10:00 am, hoping to miss rush hour, but that wasn’t the case. Stop and go traffic as we skirted around Washington DC on I-495, it finally broke as we neared Baltimore, but only briefly, and we were once again in the yin and yang of it. Our Garmin Nuvi said it was 169 miles to Atlantic City, with an ETA of 1:30 pm, but we decided to stop for lunch and quench the thirst of Ms. Sol Crucero just north of Baltimore in Aberdeen, MD.

Finding a gas station with easy in and out accessibility for the rig plus toad is always a challenge when you’re pushing 60 feet in length. Sometimes we get lucky and find one in close proximity to a large parking lot to have lunch, as was the case today.

Back on the road, passing through Delaware and into New Jersey, we finally arrived at our home for the next few days, Chestnut Lake RV Park, shortly after 3:30 pm. After getting set up, we were both ready for an adult beverage, as the temp was 101. Today was a first in our travels; moving through four states in one day.

Since the temps were again predicted to be above the century mark, we decided to enjoy the air conditioning in Atlantic City at Harrah’s. Signing up for a player’s club card entitled us to a coupon book with $10 in free play each, and coupons for free drinks and half price meals. It also contained a free parking pass. This is the first casino I have ever been to that charged for parking, but this is NJ, and these Northeasterners NEVER miss an opportunity to charge for something, that anywhere else, would be free; Capitalism is alive and well in Atlantic City. Did I mention the $50 in tolls we paid to get here from Washington DC? (As usual, click on any image to enlarge)

We managed to play and stay cool for about five hours and after being down $$$, CC hit four aces with a kicker on $0.25 Video Poker, which paid $500. She immediately hit the cash out button, and said to me, “We’re outta here”; Right, no argument from me.

The following day, the weatherman again predicted temps of 100 and above, so after some much needed provisioning and lunch, ventured to Bally’s, another coupon casino, to take advantage of the cool and free play/parking. Today was my lucky day, hitting four aces for $300, we decided it was time to rat hole our winnings and head for the house around 5:30 pm. All in all, we had a hot time in Atlantic City.

Another hectic travel day already? We were both a little nervous about navigating both Newark, NJ, and The Big Apple, on the Garden State Parkway, so CC routed us around both on I-287. A wise choice as it turned out, traffic was moderate but no delays, and we managed to make it to our new home at Black Bear Campground, in Florida, NY by 2:00 pm.

Upon check-in, we received a booklet entitled, “Orange County Travel Guide”, and inside the cover were listed the top ten things to do. To my amazement, Orange County Choppers was listed. For those of you unfamiliar with this establishment, they have a TV show, “AmericanChopper “, on the Discovery Channel.

One of the bikes on display is the one they built to honor the Police and Firefighters that perished on 9/11. There are a total of 20 – 30 bikes on display, but this one has a special place in the showroom, and I can only imagine, in Paul Sr’s heart as well.

This is one that I had not seen on the show, probably because it’s a bicycle, but it does showcase the talent and creativity of Orange County Choppers.

Tomorrow, we are going to The Big Apple to see The Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, The Empire State Building, Ellis Island, Times Square, Ground Zero, Fifth Avenue and The Theatre District (my personal favorite (?). It should be a busy day, as we will be leaving here at 7:30 am and returning around 6 pm.

June 1 - 6, 2011 "Washington DC"

The broken record plays the same song again, “Where has the time gone?” A week in the Washington DC area, and trying to see so much is insane. Who me? OK, I’m guilty. For those of you that are planning a visit here, be VERY, VERY selective on exactly what you want to see and do, as there is far more here than can be accomplished in a week, or for that matter a month; just so much history here to absorb (the easy part) and try to understand. For those of you that have been to any one of the 19 Smithsonian’s, you can relate, and for those that haven’t, trust me, your brain will feel like it wants to burst, and if you walk the town, as we did, your entire lower body will be screaming at you in the morning.; that is, UNLESS you are used to walking 8 – 10 miles per day, then you should be fine.

On with the show. I have narrowed this blog entry down from over 200 photos that we took, which is in itself mind boggling, as everywhere one looks in this town, a Kodak moment arises. OK, OK, on to the snapshot of our visit.

Our home for the week is Bull Run Regional Park in Centerville, VA, about an hour drive west of downtown DC, almost due south of Dulles International Airport. The Smithsonian has opened a new Air and SpaceMuseum on the south end of Dulles, and being so close, we decided to take advantage of the opportunity. Admission to any of the Smithsonians are free, but at this Air and Space Museum there is a $15 charge for parking. Politics has found it's way into every aspect of our society. Is it only a tax if the Government CALLS it a tax? Or could it be a tax disguised as something else? Why don't they just come clean and call it what it is? Free admission but a charge for parking? One of the historic planes on exhibit is the B-29 that flew the mission that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan, to end World War II, the Enola Gay.

The Space section of the museum is large enough to house one of the Space Shuttles, the Discovery.

The following day, we decided to “Do the Monuments in DC”. We drove the Jeep into Arlington, VA to meet with one of Jason’s friend and classmate, Christy, who is now working for our Government in DC. CC and I are both very proud of the woman she has become, but knew from the beginning, when we first met her over 10 years ago, that she was cut from the “Right Stuff”. She graciously agreed to play “Tour Guide” and we are so grateful she did; it MADE our visit perfect. Here we are pictured in front of the WashingtonMonument, at the start of our 8 – 10 mile walking tour.

The National Mall, which is the area that contains most of the monuments, and runs from the Capitol on the East end, to the Lincoln Memorial on the West end, a distance of about 2 miles, with the Washington Monument and World War II Memorial located between the two. As a child, I had the opportunity to visit, and the only monument to any war at that time was the World War I Monument.

The World War II Monument was opened April 29, 2004, and it is truly a heart touching experience to experience the loss of over 400,000 of our brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for OUR freedom. To stand there in reflection, I have a hard time understanding how any US citizen could be critical of our Military, and the price they have paid to insure the many privileges that We, the living, enjoy day to day.

Another new monument to me, is that of the Korean War, in which both of our fathers served, and were lucky enough to come home to us in one piece. The memorial was dedicated on July 27, 1995.

The Viet Nam Veterans Memorial – The Wall USA, was dedicated on November 1, 1982.

By now, it’s time for a break, AND a bottle of water, a bargain (?) at $3 on the mall. At this point I’m thinking, OK, we’re about half way through the tour. Boy was I wrong. We still had another 5 – 6 miles to cover, so time to gather our tired bones, and hit it; on to the remainder of the Presidents Monuments.

The Lincoln Monument seems to be pale in comparison to the Washington, but only from a height perspective. I had to chuckle, as we climbed the stairs, and entered the memorial, there was a sign that read, “Quiet Please In Respect of Others”, HaHaHAHa, it sounded like an NBA Playoff game in there. Either there are more illiterate people in the US than I thought, OR people don’t know how to be respectful, OR the signs are meant for everyone BUT them, the self proclaimed privileged few; I surmise a combination of the latter two.

There is a lot of construction going on in the area, new and that of a refurbishing type, so the walk to the Jefferson Memorial was quite a hike, considering the World War I Monument was fenced off, and we had to walk around. Next detour was a fence around the construction of the new Martin Luther King memorial, due to open later this year. Around the lake, bordered by Japanese Cherry Trees (not in bloom dang it) we made our way to the FranklinDelano Roosevelt Memorial.

More construction in route to the Jefferson Memorial, altered our path, but we were determined to make it. Jefferson was, in my opinion, the one person that made our country what it is as we know it, as author of the Declaration of Independence, served as third President of the US and commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Now, only a mile walk to the Metro. Get home, get some rest, for another day tomorrow.

We had plans to meet another friend, and former roommate, Gretchen, and catch up on what we have missed since seeing her last. I won’t go into any details here, but she is one tough lady, a side of here we had never known. We played phone tag all day long, and finally made plans for dinner. It was fantastic seeing her again, and re-acquainting. The meal was secondary to the visit, and it ended much too soon, but all good things must come to an end. Take care of yourself and those precious kids.

OK, back to DC, and the Smithsonian Museum(s). This is where I really had to cull pictures, but I’ll post a few “teaser shots”. The Smithsonian Cathedral houses the Visitors Center.

Probably the most photographed house in the world, wasn’t high on my list of “must see’s”, but, as long as we were here, coupled with the fact that this was CC’s inaugural visit to DC, I succumbed to the pressure, and the walk, and made our way to The White House, home to the President.

A personal observation on Washington DC. This place is so out of touch with reality it amazes me. Walking through the Georgetown area, we noticed a gas station selling regular unleaded for $5.09 a gallon, while just 45 minutes west, close to where we are staying, it is selling for $3.69. CC and I had lunch at one of the Smithsonian Museum Cafes, and it was $26 for two sandwiches, 1 small bag of chips, and one iced tea; and I might add the sandwiches were not near as good as the pre-made ones you buy at 7-11 out of the cooler. The attitude of residents of the area seem to be, "What's your problem, pay up". So my question would be, does THIS Governments attitude toward money affect society, OR does societies attitude toward money affect this Government?

May 20 – 30, 2011 “Jamestown, Yorktown & Williamsburg, VA”

Sensory overload is the phenomenon CC and I are experiencing; so much history in such a small area. We purchased the 7 day pass ($79.95 each) that allowed us to tour all 3 locations at our leisure during the one week period. We could have easily spent more time here, but there is only so much feeble old brains like ours can comprehend and absorb.

Jamestown - In 1607, 13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, a group of 104 English men and boys began a settlement on the banks of Virginia's James River. They were sponsored by the Virginia Company of London, whose stockholders hoped to make a profit from the resources of the New World. The community suffered terrible hardships in its early years, but managed to endure, earning the distinction of being America's first permanent English colony. Yorktown - On October 19, 1781, the decisive military campaign of the American Revolution culminated with the British surrender to combined American and French forces under the command of George Washington. The Siege of Yorktown effectively ended the six-year struggle of the Revolutionary War and set the stage for a new government and nation.

The Nelson House is beautifully restored mansion of early Georgian architecture, this was the home of Thomas Nelson, Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Governor of Virginia and commander of the Virginia Militia during the siege of Yorktown. The house is mainly made out of bricks that originated from England.

The Yorktown battlefield is about 800 yards from this historic house, where errant British cannonballs still lie embedded in the brick exterior.

Williamsburg, an independent city located on the Virginia Peninsula in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of Virginia, USA. As of the 2010 Census, the city had an estimated population of 14,068. It is bordered by James City County and York County, and is an independent city. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Williamsburg with James City County for statistical purposes.

Originally Middle Plantation, a 1632 fortified settlement located on high ground on the Peninsula between the James and York rivers, it was renamed Williamsburg after the capital of the Virginia Colony was moved there from Jamestown in 1698. The town received a royal charter as a city in 1722, and was the center of political events in Virginia leading to the American Revolution.

The Governors Palace, home to seven royal governors, Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson.

Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, often known by simply Lafayette, played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War against England. Some historians conclude that he and our Founding Father, George Washington, had a father-son relationship, and it was he, Lafayette, that rode into Williamsburg and announced the Patriots defeat of the British at Yorktown, which was the last major battle of the war.

Every once in a while I see something intriguing; such was the case with this automatic gate closer. Ingenious you say? What else were the early patriots to do with all of the cannon balls after the war ended?

Tomorrow is a travel day as we motor toward Washington, DC, to visit friends and tour the Smithsonian Museum(s). We needed a small break, to allow the swelling of our brains to subside. This full timing is starting to be like work; we must find a happy medium if we are to survive. Otherwise, we may as well go back to work………......................……….NOT!

May 8 – 19, 2011 “Englewood Beach, FL to Virginia Beach, VA”

After a fantastic visit with Kathi & Obe, we are now northbound to Starke, FL, a distance of 223 miles, where we stayed at the Starke/Gainesville KOA . By the time we arrived and got set up, we were both feeling like our stomachs were scraping our spines, so naturally set out in search of a chow down spot. (WARNING: I AM CHEATING ON THIS POST) Since we have moved so fast, and have been so busy, I am including links to places we’ve seen, and things/tours we’ve taken, as this will greatly enhance the information, and lessen the time it takes to blog about everything we did during this posting. A mere 2 miles up the road was Sonny’s Bar-B-Q where I feasted on $10.99 all you can eat ribs. For those of you unfamiliar with Sonny’s, I can only say,“Thank God I don’t live around one, or I would look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy”. For those of you familiar with, and live close by one of the 150 locations, all I can say is “You lucky chumps”.

Travel day has us motoring toward Savannah, GA, 169 miles to the northeast, where we checked into the Savannah Oaks RV Park. As soon as we were at home (set up), CC began her due diligence to locate and procure a Tour of Savannah the following day. Savannah is a beautiful city, and well worth the time and $$$ for admission.

Included with the tour was lunch at Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House. For those of you unfamiliar with Uncle Bubba, he is Paula Dean’s little brother. For those of you unfamiliar with Paula Dean the “Butter Queen”, all I have to say is either you live under a rock and have never dined on Southern Cuisine, or, are a damned Yankee. If the latter is true, it’s not too late for redemption, just head south to Savannah and order up some Shrimp and Grits or Southern Fried Chicken.

Another travel day already? It’s off to Charleston, SC, a short jaunt of 107 miles. While in route, the “Change Engine Oil” warning flashed on the dash of the rig, so CC phoned Camping World in Charleston and they were extremely accommodating in getting us in on short notice for an oil change and lube.

This week we are traveling at breakneck speed to meet our friend George aka Jorge, in Myrtle Beach on Sunday, and then hump it on to see CC’s Brother Mike, on Monday, in Virginia Beach. This part of full timing is starting to be like work; hurry to get there and then hurry to get someplace else. But that is part of why we chose this lifestyle, to see family and friends that we haven’t seen in some time. CC reminded me that we can take it easy next week, while George and Mike are working. That’s what I call, “Putting things in perspective”.

While at Camping World, CC spotted a 2011 Winnebago Tour 42QD, and it was REALLY nice, with a floor plan that we both liked, complete with a bath and a half. Will this be the “Ultimate Rig” for us? Time will tell. Exhausted from shopping, (I not CC) departed Camping World to make our home, complete with hammock, at Lake Aire RV Park on the outskits of town.

The following day we were up with the chickens to take in two Tours of Charleston; First the Town Tour, and later that afternoon a tour of Magnolia Plantation. The following is a typical single row home in the historic district.

Beautiful Magnolia Plantation is still owned by the founding family, and has been since 1676.

It is definitely a small world. Today while at the Magnolia Plantation, we overheard two ladies saying they were from Oklahoma. When I asked “where in OK?”, they replied Oklahoma City, and CC chimed in that we (her and I) went to MCHS in OK. The look on their face was priceless, as they responded, “What year did you graduate?” When CC said 1971, they almost fainted, because they too were classmates of ours some 40 years ago at the same high school. Anyway, long story short, Kathy and LeAnn, it was nice seeing you again, and we hope you enjoyed your cruise to the Bahamas. It truly is a small world!

No rest for the weary, and so it is on to Myrtle Beach, SC, 119 miles northeast along the Atlantic coast, where our home is now located at the Briarcliff RV Resort. We need to retire with the chicken tonight, as Jorge will be here manana.

We have known Jorge for almost 20 years and first met him when Jason played lacrosse, and George had an indoor facility the boys played in during the cold winter months in Colorado. As our acquaintance grew, so did our friendship, and in 1997(?) coached a youth lacrosse team to an undefeated season and a State Championship; infamously forever referred to as “Panther B”. Actually, George coached, along with fellow LAX guru Dave, whilst I manned the water bottles. It’s a tough job, but someone had to do it.

We spent the day chatting and catching up on old times and current events of our everyday lives now, and even broke free for lunch at a great little home owned joint called Prosser’s Bar-B-Q in Murrells Inlet, SC. The food was outstanding.

After lunch, a walk on the beach was in order to walk off some of the grub we chowed down. All in all, we had a wonderful visit. Take care buddy!

Up and on the road by 8 am, today we will travel 370 miles. We haven’t driven that far in one day since June 2010; it was mostly an uneventful trip to our home for 3 days at First Landing State Park.

We had just gotten set up around 5:45 pm when Mike called and said dinner was ready. CC set an all time record showering, curling her hair, and applying makeup in less than an hour. We arrived at Mike’s house shortly before 7, and were welcomed with open arms by he, his wife Debra, and young adult children, Travis and Shannon. Debra had a gourmet meal prepared of appetizers and fresh salmon that was perfectly seasoned and cooked, not to rare but still moist and flaky; simply perfect! A couple of us MAY have consumed one too many adult beverages, but we had a fabulous time. This is the incredible view we enjoyed while dining. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

The following day consisted of sailing the Chesapeake Bay with Mike on his sailboat. This is where I let CC take over, and let her give her $0.02 worth on just how the day transpired. Take it away CC, but be nice; he is, after all, your brother. I will only begin by saying “I THINK Mike had a hangover”.

We started off enjoying a little breakfast with Mike at our campsite. Mike was waiting for the wind to pick up a bit. The boat was in the “Little River Marina” a short drive from the campsite. After a short walk on the dock telling us about all his friends and fellow boat captains we boarded his boat named “Second Circle”. Following a few simple directions from Captain Mike, assisting with backing out of the boat slip we were off. The weather was beautiful, a few clouds with a slight breeze of 10 to 12 mph. After motoring out past the no wake zone Mike turned off the motor and raised the sails. We were moving right along at 7 knots according to the Captain. The sea was not too choppy for the Captain but for his two land based mates the boat was pitching and rolling. It was not too bad as long as I stayed up on deck. The three of us were enjoying the view, the ocean, and the conversation.

We were going to tack back in the other direction so Mike asked me to move forward. As I moved up to another seat and turned around to face the direction we came from I commented, “Mike did you notice that big dark cloud following us?” Looking over his shoulder Mike’s demeanor changed. He turned back to me and said, “Why did you have to find that?” Mike attempted to keep the light conversation going while analyzing the situation. We could not outrun the approaching storm and it was too big to go around, so he decides to hit it in its teeth! Not knowing what to expect I asked, “On a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being the worse what should I expect? The First Mate Fester responded, “4”. Knowing these two I was not reassured. The Captain lowered the sails with minimal assistance from his two mates. The wind and the rain were pushing us out and the boat trying to motor back to the marina the Captain commented that the trip back would not be as fast as the trip out. Our experienced Captain at the helm was trying to look through the rain sailing the boat back into the harbor, waiting for the wind to shift when he looked around and said, “I think it blew over!” Of course I thought it was wishful thinking on his part but there was blue sky over head. Captain Mike was so excited he was ready to turn around and go back out sailing. My immediate comment was, “Are you kidding?” We probably would have turned around and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon on the ocean but the wind stopped which stomped all over Mike’s excitement. So after a slow leisurely uneventful ride back in to the boat slip we were back at the dock early. While tying it up and buttoning down the hatches Mike noticed a problem with the bilge pump. So for the next few hours we enjoyed watching Mike crawl up, over, around and thru the boat trying to fix the problem. The boys (Captain and First Mate) made a run to the boat parts store and I enjoyed a few minutes listening to the sounds around the marina. It was a wonderful day of sailing with a little excitement and a little maintenance. We had a great time.

After a full (?) day of sailing, it was off to dinner at Captain Groovy’s, a favorite of Mike and Debra's for a little bite to eat. CC and I split the grilled seafood combo plate of grilled shrimp, flounder and crab cakes, served with rice and vegetables, and it was soooo good. Now I understand why it is one of their favorite places in the area.

The following morning, Mike called, and said he was bringing the kids by to see the rig. Debra was not feeling well, and had a doctors appointment, so she would not be joining us. After a brief tour of the rig, we all headed for the beach for a mid-morning walk.

Needless to say, the kids were relieved to know that Mike had planned on taking us to the Boardwalk in VA Beach, and they were free to come or go. As we would have done at that age, they went, home that is. Again, we had a wonderful visit, and enjoyed the time spent. Mike suggested a place for lunch, the Rockfish Grill, and it did not disappoint. I had the She-Crab Backfin Soup, and it was fantastic.

After a brief walk on the beach as we headed back to the car, I managed to catch brother and sister; all together now, “Ain’t they sweet?”

As they say (who is they?) all good things must come to an end. Mike is an international pilot for Delta, and he had to go back to work, as he had a flight to London today out of Kennedy, and we are still northbound. With good-bys behind us we fired up Ms. Sol Crucero, and it was off to Williamsburg, VA. Thanks Mike and Debra for a fantastic visit.

April 25 - May 7, 2011 "Manasota Key, FL"

After a short drive of only 69 miles, we arrived at Homosassa Springs RV Park. After getting checked in and set up, we wanted to explore the area, and right down the road was the State Park, complete with mosquitoes. I don’t think these guys and gals hardly noticed. The park is also a sanctuary, caring for injured animals, as was this Bald Eagle, along with other rehabilitating manatee, owls, foxes, and deer.

While here at the RV park, CC did some laundry, and some provisioning, while I tried to catch up on our budget and finances. That part of life doesn’t change, whether your living this lifestyle or in a stix and brix. Money doesn’t grow on trees; wonder if anyone has reminded Congress of that?

Another short hop of 80 miles, and we were at our new home, the Tampa East RV Resort. These long(?) travel days are really taking their toll on us. HaHa! After check in and set up, CC reminded me that we were only a few miles from Lazy Days, the largest RV distributor in the world; soooo off we were to find our “Ultimate Rig”. Upon arrival at Lazy Days we were asked a few questions, and the receptionist then called for a sales person by the name of Moke to assist us. He was a very nice and friendly young guy, new to the industry, and really worked his tail off, trying to find us exactly what we were looking for in our “Ultimate Rig”. We narrowed it down to a 2007 Tiffin Phaeton 42 footer, with tag axle with a 350 HP Cummins diesel.

We slept on it, and kept coming back to the one thing, well actually two, that we just couldn’t live with; the TV location in the living area, and the possible misconception that I thought the 350 to be a little small for this size of rig. It drove and rode remarkably well on the test drive, but that was in flat Florida, and not in the mountains that seem to now be in our blood, after 30 years of living in Colorado. We could have done the deal for $100K plus our rig as a trade in, but we were not willing to sacrifice what we wanted AND be $$$ lighter in the wallet. We will continue looking; there has to be a rig out there with our name on it.

May 2, 2011 Our One Year Anniversary ; One year ago today, we left our home of 10 years and moved into Ms. Sol Crucero full time. We haven’t killed one another yet, so I guess we’ll keep trying; Happy FT Anniversary CC!

Travel day; a short 75 mile jaunt to the southwest, along the Florida coast, to the beach community of Englewood Beach to visit longtime friends, Kathi and Obie. (Last names withheld to protect the innocent.) The arrival ritual consisted of shots of tequila followed by biting a lime---ooops, forgot to stop and get limes---Cheers anyway! It’s been a long trip for us since leaving Weslaco on March 15. Let’s do another shot!

Bright and early (?) the next morning we walked down to their dock, and were pleasantly surprised at a couple of dolphins chasing mullet off the seawall. Pictures were hard to take, because you never knew just where the dolphins would surface, but it was fun watching them chase the fish, and play with them after they were caught, that is, until it was lunchtime---down the hatch lil’ fishy!

We trekked on down to the Lock & Key for a light lunch; calamari and nachos ala margaritas. A strange combination you say? Both were outstanding, AND we had leftovers. Time for the beach, and a few more margaritas; I think we were all ready for bed as midnight approached. Manana is a new day!

CC and I stumbled across a little neighborhood bakery in nearby North Port, FL, where the apple fritters are to die for, Abbe’s Bakery on the Tamiami Trail. (The cinnamon rolls aren’t too shabby either.) I ordered 4 of each, and off to Kathi and Obie’s we were. After making pigs out ourselves it was time for a little boating.

What a great day, just being on the water, taking in the sights and smells, watching for dolphins, soaking in the sun, sipping an ice cold margarita; aaahhhh………life is good! There was one of us in the foursome that decided that THEY were going to do some skiing, and after several (4) unsuccessful attempts, made their way back into the boat. My lips are sealed, and I’m not naming names, but they DO have at least two vowels in their name; and that’s ALL I’m saying.

Now it’s time for a great meal at The Gulf View Grill on Manasota Key. I had the Parmesan Encrusted Chilean Sea Bass, Kathi opted for Crab Colorado (a misnomer if ever there were one), and Obie and CC chose the Scallop and Shrimp Fettuccini. Great food with great friends; Life is indeed good.

While in the area we also dined at Maria’s Mexican Café, and the 776 Café, and both were very, very good, and are highly recommended along with Lock and Key and Gulf View Grill. Parting company is always a hard time for CC and I, as we have come to realize just how precious life and the gifts of life are, but the time has come to say our good bys. The week has gone by much too fast, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit, your company and your hospitality. Hasta luego, mi amigos!

Another travel day again? Wow, where have the last two weeks gone? This is the gypsy lifestyle we have chosen, and so it is, with a heavy heart, we now head northward, up the Eastern seaboard, in search of “The Ultimate………” Until next time, take care and stay well

April 17 - 24, 2011 "Florida Coastal Highway 98"

Emerald Coast RV Resort is a top rated resort by Woodall’s and Trailer Life, and we can see why. This place is gorgeous; landscaped to the 10’s and impeccably well maintained. While our nightly rate of $66 is steep, spaces here for the winter average about $600 per month, with a four month commitment. (As always, click on any image to enlarge)

Our trip across the Gulf of Mexico has enabled us to survey the beaches as we travel. Hands down, Panama City Beach is the best so far; powdery soft off white sand, with the clearest water we have seen since leaving South Padre Island, TX. It has been almost one year since the Gulf oil spill, and I can honestly say you wouldn’t imagine the beaches could be so clean. We saw no indication at all, of any remnants of the spill; our rating for Panama City Beach, an astounding 10.

Another travel day; it sure is hard to leave such a beautiful resort and beach, BUT, like Pee Wee, we are on to the next big adventure, with Carrabelle, FL in our sights. We have followed Highway 98 along the coast for most of our Florida “vacation”, and it does not disappoint the visual appetite, especially having lived in Colorado for the past 30 years. As we pull into Carrabelle Beach, we noticed a change in the beaches appearance, from that of our departure just 90 miles to the northwest.

One of the first questions we ask upon check in at a new destination is, “Are there any place(s) that you would consider a must see, must do, while in the area?” You see, we are currently on the shores of Apalachicola Bay, THE oyster capitol of The Gulf of Mexico. Our friends, Carl and Carla recommended an out of the way place in nearby Indian Pass, and the Ho Hum RV Park manager agreed, the Indian Pass Raw Bar was a must do. Mere words alone cannot describe how fresh and sweet the oysters were, but I can honestly say, for those of you how don’t like oysters, eating them here would change your attitude, and your palate.

As the sun rose the following day, while sipping our morning beverages, we gazed out across the Gulf, watching the pelicans dive into the emerald waters for their breakfast; we pondered our day’s activities. How about a walk down the beach? Sounds like a plan, so off we were. As the tide slowly drifted out, we were suddenly awestruck by an unusual creature at water’s edge; a Horseshoe Crab, almost prehistoric in its appearance.

Making our way a little further down the beach, we noticed a “gathering” of Horseshoe Crabs; and then it FINALLY donned on me, “Mating Season”. During the breeding season, horseshoe crabs migrate to shallow coastal waters. Smaller males select a female and cling onto her back. The larger female digs a hole in the sand and lays her eggs while the male fertilizes them. The female can lay between 60,000 – 120,000 eggs in batches of a few thousand at a time. Many shore birds will eat the eggs before they hatch. The eggs take about 2 weeks to hatch. The larvae molt six times during the first year. Another travel day already? You’ve got to be kidding me. Where does the time go? Oh well, if we must…..We continue along Highway 98/19 southeast in the direction of Old Town, FL, a distance of 135 miles, we move a little further inland and away from the coast line drive. It continues to amaze us that pine trees and palm trees can grow in the same eco system, side by side; I surmise too many years of living in the high plains desert of Colorado, can make one leery of such vegetation. But arrive we do, at the Yellow Jacket RV Resort, right on the Suwannee River; can you say “Hot & Humid?” Right. Off to the pool for a cool down.

We had been in the pool for all of 15 minutes when a gentleman asked, “Are you coming to the pot luck dinner tonight?” Well, didn’t know we were invited. Sure, just sign up, and bring a side dish. (We decided on taking Potatoes Lyonaise.) So promptly at 5 we ventured to the pavilion where 20 - 25 people gathered and shared a 30 pound smoked ham. It still amazes us how incredibly friendly people in the South are. We had a wonderful time, met some new people, and as always, with any pot luck, ate waaaay too much. Diet starts tomorrow. Right.

April 5 - 16, 2011 "Mississippi, Alabama & Florida"

We had an uneventful travel day from New Orleans to Gulfport, MS, which is the way we like them. It is so nice to travel in the South; people are Soooo friendly and helpful. We pulled into Southern Oaks RV Park a little after noon, set up and decided to just relax for the remainder of the day. The following day we went for a drive along the beach to survey the repairs that have been done since Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in September 2005. Most of the damage has been repaired, and / or replaced, but there are many vacant water front lots for sale. The residents made lemonade out of lemons by commissioning artist to carve wooden sculptures out of the damaged trees along the waterfront. (As always, click on any image to enlarge)

The following day, CC was feeling frisky (I mean lucky) and convinced me we needed a little R&R at the Island View Casino Resort. After our last episode of kissing sister in Lake Charles, I was skeptical, but being the nice guy that I am, finally succumbed to her prodding. After an hour or so we were down a whopping $12, playing $0.25 Video Poker, when I suggested we move to another area of the casino in search of a winning machine. While we sat there, I complained that I hadn’t had a flush all day, and CC exclaimed, “You mean like this one”. She didn’t even realize what she had until I shrugged my shoulders and said “Yea, like that one.” You can see by the reaction on her face, just how low keyed she was. I guess it was her lucky day.

On Thursday, while CC did laundry, I finished our taxes, and got that information off to our accountant. I’m sure I will be writing checks in the near future. While I could easily be prompted to get on my soap box, and scream about all the wasteful spending by Congress, I will merely comment that I, for one, will no longer vote for another incumbent until the situation is rectified.

Friday was a travel day; Gulfport, MS to Foley, AL, a short drive of 108 miles. We have slowed our travel pace down considerably, largely due to gas prices, but also to take some time and “smell the roses”. We arrived at the 5 star resort, Bella Terra, shortly after noon, set up and ventured off to Gulf Shores, Al, for a boat show. There were 250 boats on display, 100 of which were in the water. CC found one she would consider, a 52 foot Carver that would average 3 - 4 gallons per mile. Yes, you read correctly, 3 - 4 gallons per mile. While Ms. Sol Crucero is currently averaging 7 – 8 miles per gallon, it makes the price of gas less painful in retrospect. It’s all about perception.

The Strawberry Festival in Loxley, AL was our destination for Saturday. They were also hosting a car show, which I enjoyed more than the festival. On display were about 80 cars, all makes and models, from Studebakers to Corvettes to Ferraris. CC’s eye was captured by this beauty.

Afterward, we were both famished, and found Lambert’s in Foley, AL. For those of you that have never been to one of the three Lambert locations, let me just say, you will leave feeling as if you had just eaten Thanksgiving dinner.

I ordered the catfish dinner, a little pricey, I thought, until they presented the plate of 6 catfish fillets. CC ordered the lemon pepper chicken breast, and it was the whole thing; both breasts. A double full breasted chickadee, if you will. My kinda bird!

Sunday we decided to drive the 30 miles to Pensacola, and check out not only the town but the beach as well. It was a cool and overcast day, so lunch and a brief walk on the beach was all we wanted. Pensacola Beach was the nicest we had seen so far in our quest across the Gulf; semi-soft light beige sand and huge expansions of it. The water was clearer than at Gulf Shores, but only marginally.

We like to travel Monday – Thursday, thus avoiding the “weekenders”. So it was off to Niceville, FL, just a few miles north of Destin and Ft. Walton Beach, FL. It was, again, as we prefer an uneventful trip to Fred Cannon Rocky Bayou State Park. (Wow, that’s a mouthful) What a wonderful place, as we have found State Parks to be among the best camping values for the money, and this did not disappoint.

As we sat, lounging in our chairs and looking over the bayou, CC noticed a “snake” peeking its head out of a hole in the tree next to us. Upon closer examination, it was only a Five Lined Skink, and NOT a snake, as I explained to her, snakes don’t have legs.

BOOM…. BOOM…. BOOM…. What the hell was that? It sounded like something exploded, as I ran out of the rig to see if I could see smoke arising from a downed airplane. Another BOOM, and no smoke. Sonic booms perhaps? As we exited the park for our daily excursion, I asked the Park Ranger if he knew what the explosions were. As he explained to me, the Department of Defense has a bomb detonation school nearby, where they train our allies, to detonate unexploded ordinates found around the world. OK, no harm no foul; on to Henderson State Park in Destin, right on the beach.

Happy birthday CC. Today she turned the big ?? (I may be slow, but I’m not stupid). We decided on some R&R at the rig (OK now, get your minds out of the gutter) and just relax and absorb some of the beautiful surroundings that Mother Nature had provided us. We kept looking for Bullwinkle, but he was nowhere to be seen, as Rocky made a solo appearance.

Another travel day already? It seems like we just got here. But as reality set in, it was on to Panama City Beach, FL, a very short jaunt of only 55 miles, where we checked into Emerald Coast RV Resort, another 5 star resort. And well it should be at $66 per night; OUCH!

March 29 - April 4, 2011 "Louisiana"

Where is the calendar? Without it, I have no idea of where we have been, OR, where we are going, OR what day it is. We left League City, TX, in route to Lake Charles, LA, where we stayed at Sam Houston Jones State Park, just north of Lake Charles. At the top of the list, on things to do, was finding the best Cajun food in town. We asked around, and hands down, all agreed, Steamboat Bill’s on Lakeshore Drive; it did not disappoint!

We both opted for the gumbo; CC had piquant and I chose chicken and sausage. After 4 months of Mexican food, my taste buds were kicking up their heels with a new culinary sensation. Mmmmm Good. I think CC enjoyed it as well; she might not be so bold as to publicly admit it, being the Hispanic connoisseur that she is. http://www.steamboatbills.com/

We tried or luck at the local casinos, Isle of Capri and L’Auberge, and had mixed results. Win a little, lose a little; kind of like kissing your sister. Oh well, at least we didn’t break the bank; ours OR theirs. Now it was time for a walk along the lake, as they have a very nice paved walk on the NE side, adjacent to the downtown area. It was an overcast day, in the mid 70’s, as we strolled along watching the ducks swim and children feeding oyster crackers to the hundreds of hungry pigeons.

Travel Day. On to Breaux Bridge, LA, where we wanted to stay at Poche’s, but ended up at Cajun Palms RV Resort, which is actually nearby in Henderson, LA. Cajun Palms is a new park, maybe 2 or 3 years old, and is already expanding to double its size. It’s a little on the pricey side, but so many amenities; we didn’t have time to take advantage of all of them, because we had sightseeing on our agenda. We have so much to see in so little time, we had better get off our lazy butts and hit the road. We drove the 10 miles or so to Breaux Bridge, parked and walked around the historic district. The adjacent cemetery was CC’s first sight of above ground burial tombs. I must admit, two dimensional pictures are no match for being there in person.

Eastward to Lafayette, to find a place for lunch. Almost miraculously, as we were driving northbound on University Blvd, I noticed a full parking lot at a little out of the way place named Country Cuisine. Over the years we have rarely been disappointed when using this method of choosing a better than average eating establishment. As we entered, it became increasingly apparent to me that we were the only albino-like people there. No problemo. We stumbled around for a few minutes, do we sit down, wait for a table, go to the counter and order; just what is the protocol here?

Finally, the lady behind the counter asked, “Would you like to order?”

“Yes, I’ll have the crawfish etouffee and she’ll have the catfish.”

As we sat down, the other diners appeared to be having a party, and sure enough, Country Cuisine was having their twenty-fifth anniversary party with family and close friends. It looks like we crashed their party. Oh well, the food was fantastic, and as we exited spoke with one of the owners, who was very friendly, asking us where we were from, as he could tell we were “not from around here”. Go figure.

OK, now onto some sightseeing, as we maneuver southward to St. Martinville, in search of the Longfellow – Evangeline Plantation. As we drove up, I had a visual image of “Tara” (Gone with the Wind), and this was not what I expected; a true working small plantation of only about 700 acres.

For generations, a blend of history and legend has drawn visitors to this meeting place of incredible natural beauty and unique historical background. In legend--the area was the meeting place of the ill-fated lovers, Evangeline and Gabriel. In history--it was the meeting place of exiled French aristocrats fleeing the French Revolution, and of Acadians of Nova Scotia seeking refuge after the British expulsion. It was also the meeting place of wealthy New Orleanians escaping the oppressive heat and epidemics of the city. In nature--it is the meeting place of the swamp and the prairie.

At Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site, visitors are introduced to the diverse cultural interplay among the French-speaking peoples along the famed Bayou Teche. Many visitors may be familiar with the 1755 expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia, and their arrival in Louisiana, as portrayed in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 epic poem "Evangeline." In Louisiana, the story is also known through the poem's local counterpart, Acadian Reminiscences: The True Story of Evangeline, written by Judge Felix Voorhies in 1907.

An Acadian Cabin vividly illustrates how different the lives of the Acadians and Creoles were. Prior to the arrival of the Acadians, or Cajuns, in 1764, the Bayou Teche area had already begun to be settled by the French. Many of these settlers were descendants of the first wave of French settlers in Louisiana. They are sometimes called "Creoles," meaning native, since they were born in colonial Louisiana.

Travel day has us moving on to “The Big Easy”, where we stayed at the Bayou Segnette State Park, just south of New Orleans. Usually travel days are uneventful, and that is the way we like them, however this was NOT one of those days. As we later learned, the Huey P. Long Bridge, is the most hated bridge in the area, with 9 foot lanes and NO shoulder on either side of the 2 lanes. Our rig is 8’-4”, so that leaves about 4” on each side for clearance, and traveling 45 mph, doesn’t leave much room for error. Just about the time CC shot out of her seat, I heard “massive scraping” on the passenger side, followed quickly by the tightening of my sphincter. As I looked into the driver’s side mirror, there were 2 cars beside me, and the bridge wall a mere 4 inches from the passenger side. As I slowed, and let the 2 cars beside me escape by getting around, I moved to the center, and continued across the bridge right down the middle of the road, blocking any and all vehicles from getting around me. I was not looking forward to stopping and discovering the damage that in my mind, just had to be horrific.

We arrived at Bayou Segnette, and the first order of business was to survey the damage; OMG, only a relatively small area on the front quarter panel behind the front wheel. Thank you Guardian Angel! The rest of the check in and set up process went without a hitch, although I was definitely ready for my “customary travel day” martini after we got completely set up. I think CC also enjoyed her “Double Margarita”.

No visit to “Nawlins” would be complete with a visit to the French Quarter and the Café Du Monde for beignets. Since it was early, we started with beignets and café au lait.

The art vendors were just getting set up as we arrived, so we walked around the town square, admiring their artistic wares. Only once did this dreadlock wearing female yell at me, “No pictures!” Like what the hell is her problem? The only reason I wanted a picture was to show the setting, not her ugly mug or her artwork. (She only painted in one color; black) Now when did that become art? Oh well, on to another part of the French Quarter.

After walking around for almost two hours, both of us had worked up quite a thirst, so it was off to Bourbon Street. CC wanted a hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s, just because that is the “touristy” thing to do. I, however, being the one of us that always acts in a responsible and mature manner, agreed to something a little less “intoxicating”, especially since it wasn’t yet noon, and on a Sunday morning at that!

After re-reading this I’m thinking we need to slow down a bit. After all, we are retired and don’t need to try and cram in everything in only one week. After being at one place all winter, we are still trying to re-adjust to “Travel Mode”. With that said, tomorrow is travel day, on to Gulfport, MS, a distance of 103 miles, where we will be staying at the Southern Oaks RV Park. Until next time, take care and stay well……

March 21 - 28, 2011 "Corpus Christi & Galveston"

CC and I continue to scratch our heads and wonder where the time goes. When we were working, the days just dragged on and on; now they pass with what seems is the speed of light. If it were not for the photo journal of our exploits, I’m sure we could only wonder what we have been doing to “waste” so much time. A good friend, just this week, asked me if we were bored yet with this lifestyle, and all I can say, as we near our 10 month anniversary of “full timing”, is simply and unequivocally, ….NO…..!!! With that diatribe completed, on with our “goings on”.

The drive from SPI to Corpus Christi was uneventful, thank God, as one crazy driver passed me on the right side shoulder, as we headed north on Hwy 77, going at least 70-75 mph; Scared the jeebies out of both of us. No doubt college kids returning to school after spring break; I hope he got to where he, and his passengers, was going, alive and in one piece. We arrived at the Colonia Del Ray RV Park (http://www.ccrvresorts.com/index.htm) around 3 pm and decided to go to the pool; bad idea as it wasn’t heated. So, not to be discouraged, decided on the hot tub; wrong again, as it was about 85 degrees. The park was nice, but thumbs down on the pool and hot tub.

Corpus Christi is home to the USS Lexington CV-16. (http://www.usslexington.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=49). Imaginations run wild aboard the USS LEXINGTON. The sights, the sounds, and smells, are so real and so intense you become a part of the story the second you step foot aboard this World War II era aircraft carrier. There's an adventure around every corner as you make your way through the maze of tunnels and ladders. Your seat becomes a cockpit in our Flight Simulator. You get behind the controls at our all-new Virtual Battle Stations. And the three story tall MEGA Theater...well you'll just have to see that for yourself. (Click on any image to enlarge)

We have a personal attachment to the carrier, as CC’s brother, Mike, aka call sign “Mad Dog”, actually made his first night time carrier landing on its deck, way back in the early 80’s, in an A-6 “Intruder”, like the one pictured below.

We decided to take the “scenic” drive around Corpus via Port Aransas, and find a place for a late lunch. After the brief ferry ride…………..

We arrived at what looked like a promising culinary establishment in the Port Aransas Marina, “Fins”.

And, what I can only describe as Waaayyyy overpriced, our combo arrived that we split; shrimp, oysters, fries and coleslaw. The food was good, not great, as the price may have indicated, but we were both famished, so had no problem devouring every morsel.

The following day we decided to explore North Padre Island, thinking it would be comparable to South Padre Island, but we were sorely disappointed. Not exactly a vacation hotspot, as far as we are concerned, the island is mostly residential and not overly populated at all. It just didn’t have the “it” factor we look for, and the beach was, shall we say, less than inviting.

We did however, manage to make a silk purse out of a sows ear, by discovering “Snoopy’s” Seafood Restaurant & Bar, right on the water of Corpus Christi Bay. The food was excellent, and very reasonably priced, we rated it two thumbs up.

OK, on to the Galveston area, with a nice tail wind we finally managed decent fuel economy; almost 8. The “toad” (Jeep) pulls down the MPG by at least 1, possibly 1.5 MPG, so I was pleased with what we averaged. We filled the tank about halfway up the coast for $3.49 per gallon. With prices approaching $4, we will just adjust our travel plans, move a little slower, and stay in one place a little longer. The following day we ventured to PPL RV Sales & Consignments, to look at Diesel Pushers. They were having a huge sale, with about 450 units to choose from. We found one that we liked and went in to “talk turkey” with the sales manager; bottom line, they really did NOT want our trade-in as they were out of space and money for new inventory. The 2007 Itasca Horizon may have been a good deal, but not a great one. We’ll wait until one comes along; they always do.

Now, on to explore Galveston Island. We were impressed with the architecture, beach, and the overall “feel” of the island. We took a stroll on the beach, toured a RV park as a possibly stay next winter for a month or so, had lunch, and then another 4 mile walk on the beach, hand in hand. (All together now……Ain’t that sweet!)

Most of the damage done by Hurricane Ike has been repaired and/or rebuilt. We did notice a few places right on the beach that were damaged, that had yet to be restored. After speaking to some of the locals, we speculate they either had no insurance or are still in a fight with their insurance company over damages.

Our next destination, Lake Charles, LA, a short hop of around 150 miles, where we will be staying at Sam Houston Jones State Park. See ya there. Until then, take care and stay well………

March 8 - 20, 2011 "Spring Break at South Padre"

It’s hard to believe almost 2 weeks has gone by since our last blog entry, but we have been so busy, we just haven’t had the time; or I should say, we haven’t TAKEN the time. Why? Party, party, and more party.

Our last week at Country Sunshine was just a series of going away parties. We made many friends while we were there, and each of them wanted to give us a party. I’d like to think it was because we will be missed, but in retrospect, they were probably just glad to see us leave. Either way, we made some good friends, and will most likely return next winter for at least a month or so. Adios amigos y amigas.

Of course, we made 3 trips to Nuevo Progreso during our last week in Weslaco to stock up on the essentials (Tequila, medications, purses, gifts, etc.) , and to get our SOTB fix ($2 margaritas, Mexican food - lonches, $7 haircuts, $8 manicures and $8 pedicures). We left Weslaco on March 15, en route to South Padre Island (SPI), to re-connect with Carl & Carla, whom we first met at Country Sunshine in December. We ate our fill of shrimp, fish and oysters, and consumed a few(?) adult beverages during our 5 day stay.

South Padre Island – Coca-Cola Beach was the “happening place” daily from 11 am to 5 pm. We attempted a “walk around” and took nearly an hour. Everyone was having a good time, and all the kids we met made us feel as if we were a part of their party; maybe there is hope for our future generations.

The Capt Morgan Crew made an appearance, providing samples, trinkets, t-shirts and temporary tattoos; CC placed hers on her ??? and, I had my picture taken with the Captain and his first mates. Do I look like I'm having fun? This truly is a tough life we now live. Extremely tough.

CC the cougar, was not to be outdone in the picture department, so she rounded up a few young studs for this photo op. She is obviously NOT having fun. HaHa.........Yea right.

Our friend Carl only drinks Miller Lite, especially when the Miller girls are working. Again, all the young ladies were very friendly and very personable to all of us, even Carl.

AND, he can't resist when it comes to getting his picture taken with a pretty girl, even ones wearing Duct Tape!

My beer of choice is Bud Light on Wednesdays, and this day just by chance was a Wednesday, and it just so happened that the Bud Light girls were “sampling” their product, among other things???. They requested a picture, and who am I to say no; it’s just not in my nature.

And finally we caught Carla in the act of rustling up a young stud of her very own. I saw some phone numbers being exchanged, but my lips are sealed. What happens in SPI, stays in SPI.

We parked at the KOA on SPI, directly across the street from Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark, which had nightly concerts from 9 pm - 2 am. So, sleep was hampered by the loud music. On Thrursday night, Snoop Dog was the featured act, and at midnight, they REALLY cranked up the watts, so loud, in fact, it rattled the windows on the rig. So many in attendance they were parking cars EVERYWHERE; including the flats directly north of the campground. We awoke friday morning, and noticed 3 unfortunate ones that didn't make it out before the tide came in.

Eventually one made it out, with the help of a good samaritain unscathed, another twisted off a rear axle but managed to get out, and the third one was stll there when we left on Sunday moring. We speculate he called the finance company to tell them where their truck was located.

Today we moved northward to Corpus Christi, TX, where we will tour the USS Lexington, and visit North Padre Island, before moving on up the Gulf Coast to the Galveston area. We are back on the road and loving every minute. Until next time, take care and stay well………………………

March 1 - 7, 2011 "Vegas Night and Smokin' on the Rio"

Wow, time sure does fly; especially when you’re having fun. One more week here in Weslaco, and we’re on the road again. Hopefully, the weather north of here will be warming by then, as it is always a difficult task predicting when, exactly, Winter is over, and Spring has begun. Coupled with the rising cost of gasoline, has our travel plans in a quandary. It is our hopes that we leave here, head across the Gulf coast to Florida, (eating as much fresh seafood as humanly possible…..”What oil spill?”), and up the East Coast, seeing all there is, and on to Niagara Falls (Canada). CC has never been to New Orleans, Washington DC (Smithsonian), New York City, or Niagara Falls; she has led a very “sheltered life”……poor thing. (OK, now in unison…..aaahhhhh isn’t she mistreated?)

There is ALWAYS something going on here at Country Sunshine, most of which involves food and/or adult beverages. “Vegas Night” was an eclectic mix of Ropa Fashions and craziness. It was the topic of conversation for over a week amongst the pool “bobbers”. CC and I had no idea what to expect, as the majority of the participants were somewhat secretive about their “Jockey Uniforms”. (Click on images to enlarge)

OK, here is how it works. Participants dress up in a wide variety of costumes and ride a wooden horse through a column of taped squares on the floor. Six “Jockeys” per heat, line up at the starting line. The first of two dice are rolled to determine which “Jockey” will advance in lanes 1-6. The second dice is rolled to determine how many spaces the rider will advance, from 1 to 6 spaces. The winners of the heats make it to the semi-finals, and those winners advance to the finals. The mood for this evening could best be described as “Mucho Jocularity”.

For those of you that have not been to the RGV (Rio Grande Valley), upon arrival one of the first things you might notice is the overall majority of “healthy(?)” people, as it appears there is no malnutrition or descendants of “Twiggy” living here; the locals are a very “well rounded” Hispanic culture. Eating is not a necessity here, it is an event as witnessed by “”Smokin’ on the Rio” Texas State Bar-B-Que cook off in nearby Mercedes this past weekend, with 129 entries vying for the $10,000 first place prize money. We sampled far more than our $5 entry fee would buy at any restaurant, as this was easily the best $5 we’ve ever spent for good “Q”. Contestants with big towable rigs or smaller castered ones, everyone had a good time, and we left fully stuffed.

Next stop, we are moving to South Padre Island for Spring Break Week. Since CC and I never took a trip to the beach for Spring Break during our college days, it is on our "Bucket List", and it was a natural choice considering we are so close.

February 26, 2011 - "Puppy Size"

This is an “enlightening” story, but read it, don’t just look at the pictures.

This is one of the neatest stories you will ever hear. You will know precisely what this little girl is talking about at the end. (You'll want to share this one with your loved ones and special friends!)

“Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been back to this animal shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we started all of this” the mother told the volunteer.

“What is it she keeps asking for?” the volunteer asked.

“Puppy size!” replied the mother.

“Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking for..”

“I know..... We have seen most of them” the mom said in frustration.

Just then Danielle came walking into the office. “Well, did you find one?” asked her mom.

“No, not this time” Danielle said with a sadness in her voice. “Can we come back on the weekend?”

The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed

“You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's always a supply” the volunteer said.

Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door. “Don't worry, I'll find one this weekend” she said.

Over the next few days both Mom and Dad had long conversations with her regarding a puppy. They both felt she was being too particular. “It's this weekend or we're not looking anymore” Dad finally said in frustration.

“We don't want to hear anything more about puppy size, either” Mom added.

Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning. By now Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that housed the smaller dogs.

Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first row of cages. There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times when visitors weren't permitted.

Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look. One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each one. One by one she said, “Sorry, but you're not the one.”

It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup. The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer.

“Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!” she screamed with joy. “It's the puppy size!”

“But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the last few weeks” her mom said.

“No not size; the sighs. When I held him in my arms, he sighed” she said.

“Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told me love depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love, the bigger the sigh!”

The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a little of both.

“Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home from work and hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms” she said. Then, holding the puppy up close to her face, she said, “Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart!”

Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh. I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day? They are the sighs of God. Take the time to stop and listen; you will be surprised at what you hear. “Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”

I hope your life is filled with Sighs!!!

Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends! Life is too short and friends are too few.

Love the people who treat you right and forget about the ones who don't.

February 12 - 20, 2011 "Produce, Music & Mexico"

Finally……………..warm weather returns to the RGV, with highs near 80 and lows in the mid 60’s. Perfecto! Well almost. It’s windy here most days, with winds of 15-20 mph gusting to 30-35. We have gotten somewhat used to it, although when it’s whipping at 35 or better, it really rocks the rig. It’s funny, on windy days we don’t have many visitors; maybe the rocking rig makes them think, “Don’t go a knocking”. Hmmmmmm…………Afternoon delight?

Which leads me to an “interesting” topic; Just what do you and your significant other use as code word(s) for a little, shall we say, “making whoopee?” Here are a few we have heard here in this “Retirement Community”. We took a nap. We read a book. And from one of the guys, “I had cake for lunch”. That one took me awhile to figure out; but they are from Quebec, so now it makes sense. (Insert mini history lesson 101 - From Marie Antoinette, “Let them eat cake”. Google it if that doesn’t jog your memory.) Now, how in the hell did I get here? Starting talking about wind, and ended up eating cake. Guess we (us guys) do have a one track mind. (CC just nudged (?) me to get on with the Blog.) OK, on to other events of the week.

CC and I both enjoy fresh produce, and one advantage of staying here in the RGV, is the plethora of fruit and vegetables available. Our usual routine is to purchase on weekends and Wednesdays, that way we always have the freshest fruit and vegetables available. The pineapples here are to die for, and are mostly from Southern Mexico, they are soooo sweet and juicy; peeled and cored $3 each or 2 for $5. CC wanted some tangerines, and after peeling and tasting one, she commented, “this tangerine taste funny”, to which I replied, “yea, that’s because you’ve never had a FRESH one before.” (As always, click on any of the pictures to enlarge.)

While shopping for veggies, we stumbled across some local talent performing, a gentleman by the name of Lynn Dvorak; a classically trained, masterful musician that has played with numerous bands throughout his career. He plays the newest Yamaha TYROS keyboard, and records every track of all the songs he plays. He has worked with many notable entertainers over the years, including such stars as Rod McKuen, Gordon MacRae, Ray Price, Freddy Fender, Mel Tillis, Johnny Paycheck, Dave Dudley, Tammy Wynette, Myron Floren and JoAnn Castle from the Lawrence Welk Show.
